QT supports ES futures if the datafeed you are using provides data on futures. The only ones that I know that produce "strange" charts, would be Historical charts on ES futures if you use IB as the datafeed. For some reason, IB's EOD data is flaky. Is that what you were looking at?

You definitely do NOT need to do any such thing unless you want to get Open Book data in QT. You just need to be subscribed to whatever exchanges that you want to get data on. If the quote on a given symbol works in TWS it will work in QT.
