    A question for options traders

Thanks for the advice guys. For equities I can understand the capital and leverage advantages offered from options, but for futures things are a bit different -- any futures traders who also supplement their trading with options (as opposed to pure options players)?

    A question for options traders

Just some random questions from an options newbie: If one's methodology in a particular market concentrates on capturing strong and fast directional moves (and not much else), where would the greatest benefit in wielding options lie? If one is willing to take the risk of just going long or...

    Hedging, what it means?

Why do you think there are no profitable FX traders, as opposed to other futures traders? Do you think that the currency market is that much more difficult than say the bond or sif market? Just curious. I definitely agree that the FX forum seems to have more than its fair share of silly...

    Weekend gap in FX

It's always easy to preach from hindsight -- nobody beats them technical traders when it comes to rehashing history :)

I didn't think it would mean that much to a trader what category he would be in -- I suspect just about everything has been done before in some way or another, so no point in trying to be "special" here. But anyways, the definition I gave for TA seems to hold true, at least as true as any...

    Professional profits

The question is, do funds generally raise leverage as opportunities decrease or increase? Do they play safer when a good performance can be locked, or go for the home run? Or do they do the opposite and get more desperate as opportunities shrink and they try to maintain past performance?

Relax, you can define whatever you like. I'll even let you pigeonhole me wherever you feel comfortable, and allow you to believe whatever you want about my motives for just posting how *I* felt what TA means for me -- satisfied? Good grief :)

    "Scaling out" is inferior behavior

I hope you intraday traders realize who you're getting advice from -- it's like a pit trader taking notes from Warren Buffett.

    "Scaling out" is inferior behavior

You can guess that for alot of b1s2's trades, he gets shaken out by "obvious reversals" and gets left behind as the market continues fowards. I'm guessing his success doesn't depend upon correctly identifying reversals so much as getting lucky enough that a market has caught enough people off...

Shrug, just semantics. In my mind it's not what you use, but how you use it. If my main purpose was to avoid being labelled a technical trader, I could just claim I use FA, since you've claimed everything else to be TA. But I'll let you win the semantics argument, I really don't care --...

I would define TA as any methodology whose profitability depends almost entirely upon "static repetition".

    You see why he doesn't trade shorter-term . . .

    Weekend gap in FX

It doesn't have to gap 1000 pips to wipe you out. With your attitude, if it just fell 500 hundred pips in the space of a few days, you'd probably be in there buying it with the thought that "this move is way overdone" -- is this a good guess? Then when it keeps falling lower, you'll keep...

    "Scaling out" is inferior behavior

Wow this thread keeps getting longer going nowhere. It will rival the "trendfollowing delusion shattered" thread quite soon at this rate. B1S2 trades his long-term technical "trendfollowing" methodology (aka "hope I got lucky and fundamentals agree with my position this time"), everyone...

    Weekend gap in FX

The "massive liquidity" you speak of has a tendency to disappear completely during outlier events. Obviously we cannot trade paranoid, but the question is how you will react if such a situation develops. If you feel a market "can't" move X number of pips, you will likely not prepare for the...

A drink to take the edge off...

I became profitable the first time around while taking paxil -- I don't think it ever left my system, although the "edge" sure went away after a couple years :)

What time frame do these funds typically operate on? I've only heard of Hathersage which claims to hold most positions for less than 48 hours.

    Leverage: why only futures

I'm curious why highly levered products suitable for short-term speculation are virtually all futures, as opposed to just a leveraged vehicle that just tracks the "cash" or "spot" market. Is it true that necessity for a futures contract for a particular market develops first, then the...
