Taking 103K to 1.2million by Year End 2008

Weekly Update for week 6 ended 02/23/2008 Moderately positive week, up 4.5K (4.2%). Frightening volatility. Made it big on Tuesday, lost big on Wednesday. Traded frantically the remaining two days and went nowhere. Still haunted by poor execution on some key strategies. Find myself not...

    This Market Sucks!!!

I feel your pain. Closed out all my positions (all long) by 3pm, only to see the quotes at 4pm. Should have been 5K richer.

Is trading that hard? Or are people that stupid?

After 10 months I was in deep loss, then two further months (after 12 months) I had a profit (I call that accidental). Then followed 3 years of back-to-back losses. Glad I didnt quit. I have more than justified all the initial investment of money and effort.

    How is my performance??

I would expect Paul Tudor Jones to know the meaning of AUM. Yes, it is Assets Under Management.

Taking 103K to 1.2million by Year End 2008

Out of curiosity, I checked the execution on ARRS on friday. This was the stock I skipped when I considered shorting after hours the prior night @ 6.20, yet rushed to short at 5.09 after the market opened. Wrong move. My position monitor covered the 5000 shares at 09:50:47 at market. I took a...

Taking 103K to 1.2million by Year End 2008

Maybe same risk/reward, but the potential impact on the account is much higher!

Taking 103K to 1.2million by Year End 2008

Yes there are. You may take a trade that could go 2% for you or 1% against you with equal chance. That is low reward/low risk. On the other hand if it could go 20% for you or 10% against with similar probability, that is high reward/high risk

Taking 103K to 1.2million by Year End 2008

Weekly Update for week 5 ended 02/16/2008 Another OK week, up 6.9K (6.9%). No major moves, except the ones I did not take. It feels awful seeing a stock trade at, say 100, you put in a limit to buy at 90, and walk away. It touches 90.50, before zooming up to close the day at 110. I still...

Why would successful traders work for investment banks/prop firms/etc?

Isn't it too early in the year to be damn sure?

How much does that assume you are taking out each month for living expenses? 50k?

Sad to hear about that. Next time you may consider a pre-nup.

Taking 103K to 1.2million by Year End 2008

Four trades a month? Well if I were holding for two weeks to a month at a time, yes. But with an average of 1-day holding period, I would rather be looking for 40 great trades a month. Granted, one could have a great month with four REALLY GREAT trades, but I would rather hit the singles and...

What a difference a week makes

Why don't you separate your trading account from your investment account? Looks like you are just chipping aware from your safety net (retirement buffer?). It is not wise to be trading on the strength of your investments. How do you measure performance for each (trading vs investment). Again, it...

Taking 103K to 1.2million by Year End 2008

Yes, for a start I do not intend to do anything that could cause the balance to come way down from my starting balance (102.6K). Moreover I am still trying to get a feel for some of my rules, and getting used to them. I shall step up my risk tolerance as the account grows to a comfortable level...

Taking 103K to 1.2million by Year End 2008

Weekly Update for week 4 ended 02/09/2008 An OK week, up 5.7K (6%). Not a dramatic move, but just OK as I seek to go green for the year. Two bad trades reared up their heads. On Monday after hours, I was taught a lesson on how not to bottom-fish. Saw SIRF trading at 12.90 (down from...

How many trades a day do you consider over trading?

You decide your time-frame, and then you can say whether you are over-trading or not. If you scalp for 1c, you could be doing hundreds of trades a day. On the other hand, if you are holding your positions for the full day, a dozen might be too much.

Don't fall into the fallacy of hard work: you actually make money for waiting.

Hard work is still needed to sort out the junk each day to see whether there is a pearl somewhere.

    I went from $7,000 to $52,000

That is a round-trip. Sorry it took so long, but many people, including self, go through several round-trips before getting to a consistent upward-trending curve. Like you said, you need to take a step back, and analyze what you should do differently. Strategies that work when the market is...

    STOCK TRADING

That is a good question. There are too many losing traders that put on a trade without asking themselves how long the trade should last. While some folks can scalp for 1 or 2 cents with a five minute horizon, others are more comfortable with a longer horizon. On average, my horizon is one full...
