Day trader here, for many years, fully automated. I've never experienced any serious connection problem preventing me from trading. I don't know. Maybe it's just me being lucky, or using the right broker.

I've never realized how expensive it was to trade the micros. 2 ticks for the RT comm (without the spread)!!!! So if you trade an average of 10 positions per day, that'll come out to 20 ticks!!! It's pretty insane to trade micros in these conditions.

Bandwidth is not the speed, but the amount of data you can transfer. If you have enough bandwidth, increasing it will not make anything faster. And besides, HFT have colo infra usually. So they have direct links to the destination (exchanges, market data source) using fiber cross-connects.
