My barbell options and futures portfolio

Link to 2017 portfolio details Last year was a great year for me--until the post-election rally wiped out 75% of my gains for the year. Who knows what to expect for 2017. Hopefully some volatility returns to help us short volatility folks. This portfolio (personal and corporate) is the...

    Leverage Loan for Investing

You didn't consult an advisor--you consulted with a sales person. Those seg funds have huge MERs. I'm not opposed to the responsible use of leverage so if you want to remain invested, I would steer towards TD's e-funds which have MERs in the 0.3% range. You could also just buy a diversified...

How many underlyings do you watch/trade?

This is what my watch list looks like. Some things come in periodically (earnings/news).

    Futures broker recommendation?

LOL. I get the moans as well. I have an individual and corporate account with IB. I refuse to pay professional data fees for the corporate account so I have two simultaneous TWS applications going and use the data feed from my individual account to place trades in my corporate account.

    ES Journal - 2017/2018

Yeah, I don't see it either. If it breaks out of the channel by a full point to the upside, I'll look to cover some of my short position.

    NFLX

NFLX certainly moved, but I was able to buy back the straddle for $9.50. Much better than how it was looking for me yesterday evening.

    NFLX

NFLX was a big mover after announcing last quarter. Will it be two quarters in a row with a big move? I'm on the 'no' side and sold the January 130 straddle for $12.40. Last week, I also legged into a long Jan 27/20 130 put calendar for a cost of $0.35. Only 10 contracts so don't care too...

TSFA - Tax Free Savings Account

You also want to avoid holding US dividend paying stocks in a TFSA. The broker will take a 15% withholding tax on dividends and you can't claim a foreign tax credit. This is unlike an RRSP where there is no withholding tax because of the US-Canada tax treaty and for non-registered accounts where...

TSFA - Tax Free Savings Account

To be more specific, TFSAs are somewhat analogous to Roth IRAs. One contributes after-tax funds and all appreciation and withdrawals are tax-free. TFSAs are very flexible and can be withdrawn any time without penalty. One also regains the contribution room the following year. Eg. If in 2017, I...

    a move in ZB from 151.00 to 152.00 ??

The notional value of ZB is x1000 which is currently $152 x 1000 = $152,000 The tick size is in 32s which makes a tick equal to $31.25. So a move from $151 to $152 is worth $1000. Ticks in options are in 64s. ZN is quoted in halves of 32s or $15.625 per half 32. But a $1 move in ZN is still...

Transition to full time trader quitting school and work

I think OP is in Montreal. In Canada, CFA is almost mandatory for a finance type job. The competition is pretty fierce in Toronto. Just having a finance degree won't cut it depending on what OP is looking for.

    What is your Sharpe?

Agreed, but not just for options trading but in any trading. Sharpe is somewhat punitive to portfolios with a higher upside sigma.

What are the key points from earnings that move the price?

That's right. It's about future expectations. Look at how FB reacted this quarter as growth expectations were reset despite handily beating earnings estimates.

What are the key points from earnings that move the price?

But what does the previous quarter's earnings signal about earnings going forward? If results do not meet expectations, is there a reset on future expectations? The answer to that question can explain market reaction.

What are the key points from earnings that move the price?

In theory, the value of a company is the present value of its cash flow through perpetuity. The quarter that is being reported represents only a tiny fraction of the valuation. Strong top and bottom line growth could signal strong cash flow growth going forward. However, management guidance will...

Karen the Supertrader - TastyTrade Hybrid Experiment

I don't disagree that there will be fake outs. However, one shouldn't delta hedge every tick. There's definitely a chance of whipsaw, but the premium cushion going into the event provides a buffer.

Karen the Supertrader - TastyTrade Hybrid Experiment

I would say the ex-ante odds of Brexit and Trump are pretty similar--same as an average MLB baseball player getting a hit in a given at bat. I'll wager $1 with you that the largest 15-minute body of a candle is no more than 30 points on election night. :)
