How safe is it to be online without a firewall/antivirus

In general, this is a good compact write-up: http://www.securityfocus.com/infocus/1716 I would go for full router protection. Trying to do this in a CPU will definitely slow things down.

best language for quantiative finance? C, D, Fortran, python etc.

Only trying to help fighting ignorance. If you have any historical sense, you might reflect on IBM's PL/1 and the difficulty of getting that omnipresent & revered dog out of the woodwork, especially in academic environments.

I would suggest respectfully to read a bit about Python. It may help. Come back if you still have any questions left.

    Jack Hershey Method: Beginner Rockets

ya sound like a true believer. I'll stick with that remaining 1%. Jack, get going with trading so that your nzbryant client doesn't make a fool of himself. PS: I love that juicy 99 against 1 ratio. Imagine, 99 guys paying for my profits. Jack, prove me wrong. Get of your butt and start...

Let's all conclude then that "quants" doesn't mean anything, except for fuzzy dreaming about money-making. Another footnote for a future edition of "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and The Madness of Crowds".

best language for quantiative finance? C, D, Fortran, python etc.

    (1) You badly need to read up a few things on distributed computing, especially if C# / .NET is the only thing you seem to have heard of; (2) From your smartquant url it would appear that there is nothing special about a "quant". That's what we all seem to be tinkering with. Thank you for...

    Jack Hershey Method: Beginner Rockets

Hey Jack, Please quit filling up ET space with worthless vapor. SIMPLY START TRADING. Don't chicken out now! You got your chance to celebrity till eternity. We never saw ANYTHING from you, except for that allegedly fudged IB Demo sheet of some years ago. Be a man and stand up to back up...

OK for those who know nothing else.

Of course you can. This was not my point though. In passing, I was referring to libraries wherein sometimes Fortran runtimes are involved. NO DEED TO WRAP ANYTHING AT ALL in Python calling these libraries. Look at: http://www.scipy.org/Topical_Software Existence of Math & Stat libraries...

You must be your own Guru

Putting together a workable trading strategy is already very difficult. Why raise the difficulty at least tenfold by looking for a non-existing guru?

best language for quantiative finance? C, D, Fortran, python etc.

Recognizing your expressed reservations, your reference is most certainly not an example of "writing smart code". It would be typical of a stone-age programmer writing scientific/mathematical applications while being unaware of available math/science libraries that have evolved over the last 20+...

How long did it take for you to be profitable in daytrading?

As a matter of exercise, I have been trying for years to get people to dear to put an upperbound on your figure. Is 10% a day feasable? Is 20% a day feasable? Is 20+% a day feasable? Any takers? I kind of feel that one can not say 1% is feasable without having some kind of an idea...

True, that's why a very tiny part of the linux kernel is still done in asm. No defficiency of C or Python though. Don't like whitespace delimiting: go Ruby. Doesn't bother me at all.

    Minimum Capital Needed to Trade?

Indeed, if you can build up your capital starting from 2.5K or 5K, you can be assured that you know how to trade. If you can't do this, you may be assured that you likely will blow your 25K, 250K or more. That you need lots of capital to trade is one of the more nutty propositions...

best language for quantiative finance? C, D, Fortran, python etc.

That's obvious, but nitro did not address the Python -> C++ case. This is due to the fact that C++ is a "high clutter" language, difficult to learn and error prone. C++ and especially C are historical monuments. The elegance of Python consits partially in not do away with these but build on...

best language for quantiative finance? C, D, Fortran, python etc.

This needs correction. If you are talking abouy scientific calculation, Python gives you access to the most reputable mathematics and statistics libraries, developed over tens of years. A lot is still done in Fortran, both for the C++ as the Pyhon case and requires Fortran runtime libraries...

Could somebody tell me what's a quant? Is Jack a quant? I definitely got the impression from wading through a lot of ET that "quant" is one of the most respectable buzzwords. Meaning likely good for nothing if you have set your mind upon making money.
