I understand your concern. To get a true picture of their health check out their balance sheet and compare it to other brokers. Just because they aren't making as much money as expected doesn't mean they will fold. I'm sure their are financially stronger than 90% of brokers out there.

I'm not sure why it can't be short there nor am I suggesting any dubious activity but it's very odd to say the least. It's a good question though, is it legal to bar shorting of your own security at your own firm.

I just checked my other brokerage account and I can short it there. IB must not be allowing you to short their stock at their firm.
