No more so than straddling the market with orders. You'd almost certainly be whipsawed by both orders getting filled and getting stopped out. OP said he wanted to double his $100, I assume quickly. That's gambling.

No. You guess where the market will settle after the news event and open the position before the news event. After the event is over you close the trade, win or lose.

Straddling before a news event with opposite orders doesn't work due to the sudden widening of the spread. You'd be just giving your money away.

Just my opinion/observation: Oanda has always been transparent and doesn't play games with requotes, etc. In OP's case he's literally gambling so getting in/out with precision isn't important but keeping expenses low is. Make a guess about whether the market will settle higher or lower after...
