What did you learn this year?

Good topic. So far this year I've made 582 stock trades, this was my 5th year trading stocks full time. 4 trades accounted for over 75% of my profits. Last year I made 1397 stock trades (didn't look at my largest winners). This year I made approximately 4 times what I made last year. Less =...

My goal is 15% a year... so what strategy?

I'll take a shot at this... note that I don't use this "strategy" (using quotes because I'm obviously not well versed in options, in fact I rarely trade options) but, from what I've read and heard this is the idea: Suppose you own a portfolio of stocks, most of which are low volatility/long...

My goal is 15% a year... so what strategy?

When the market is range bound/flat or dropping, you sell the premiums and keep your position. *It is buy and hold* but it also allows you to make a premium when the market isn't going anywhere.

My goal is 15% a year... so what strategy?

Yes - BUT - you have to admit, it is relatively safe and not very time intensive. It's a buy only stock strategy that requires a simple knowledge of options. Seems like what this guy may be looking for. If he had asked to make +/-150% a year I'd tell him to day trade the ER2 or the QM, or even...

My goal is 15% a year... so what strategy?

Since you're comfortable buying stocks and want rather modest returns with relatively low risk (managing a drop in the underlying is the risk in this case) then sell covered calls. EDIT: Not sure how familiar the OP is with this strategy, but, there is a ton of information on this site as...

Technical Analysis, from a Quant's Perspective

Given the discussion of stops and targets, I think it would be wise to distinguish the use of TA for futures versus equities. The two inherently behave differently. Derivatives being elastic and subject to not only different TA principles but also different profit/loss targets. EDIT: I'm not...

Technical Analysis, from a Quant's Perspective

Thanks for this concise statement. To the OP and others, Take a look at Edwards & Magee works on TA. It's useful because it provides a framework for making objective decisions. It can be as simple as "price held $10 at time X, hence there is a good chance it will hold $10 now". The "edge"...

    Which is a greater fear?

Same here. For me it is a matter of doing what is most uncomfortable: adding size to a good position in anticipation of a big run rather than "locking in" partial profits so as to deal with the fear of loss. I used to fear loss quite a bit... but, over time as I've increased my size, the...

Market Profile -- who needs it?

I use MP. It isn't a "system" or an end all approach, far from it. It does require study and I can assure you the time put into it will be rewarded significantly. Here is what MP allows me to do: - Identify range extensions. - Identify trades with inherent "edge", i.e. price movements...

Thanks for that link, Linnsoft is my top pick thus far (I've looked in thier service earlier). Do any current users have comments on reliability? Also, am I correct in assuming the following: 1. Linnsoft offers stock and futs MP data. 2. 59/month includes all CBOT, CME, NYMEX, NASDAQ...

Foremost, moderators; I am not sure which forum would be appropriate for this thread so move it accordingly. Ok, I am in the process of re-evaluating my software packages and I want feedback. This is my current set-up: Esignal with Market Profile : ~200/month Strategy Runner (Futures...

    Why do Indexes lose volatility?

Do you have something tangible with respect to this statement? Something more empirical? Market participants are always attempting to find value - the more inclined the longer terms participants are in acting out (i.e. trading) their perception of value, the better range extensions and market...

Why the need to post PnL, real-time calls, etc?

Lets cut through your BS here - you are talking about yourself and how you act out your insecurities... Therefore EVERYONE must be just as pathetic as you... Give me a break. I can name at least 10 guys here who have and still occasionally do post calls and trade real money - myself included...

Why the need to post PnL, real-time calls, etc?

I think it fairly easy to tell who is faking their numbers. However, I do tend to give people the benefit of the doubt. So far there has only been one exposed person faking their numbers - I would speculate there are a few more however... anyway, reading in between the lines of what some of the...

How can I overcome this fear?

It could be because you care about the money rather than the trade itself. Your fear is fear of monetary loss, a very typical flaw which is usually emphasized when you are in a winning trade. Is it because you tie your success in the trade to the money asscoaited with it? While this fear is...
