    The death of Microsoft

So have I .. and on MySQL Informix, DB2. There is no "best" database server... they each have their strengths and weaknesses but through a wide range of applications they are dialtone - commodity. ... And I might add that the feature set you get with Oracle can be duplicated if you a bit...

    The death of Microsoft

$softs driver architecture design is IMHO designed only to eliminate competition: it will fail on that attempt as well.

    The death of Microsoft

Exactly: When I started in the Microsoft solutions channel in 1992 there were no Microsoft servers and the desktop was just starting to catch on .... Everyone said that NT server was garbage - and it was then but it got better. Same with the first version of SQLserver/ Sybase server. Look at...

    The death of Microsoft

Nearly three years ago one of my companies computed our new license and support costs across $soft and two other $ vendors. We looked at the numbers and decided to do a linux migration evaluation pilot. I was charged with leading the pilot. I did NOT want to do this as it meant a lot of extra...

    The death of Microsoft

Well, you can still impersonate (a new version of that old idea) another set of credentials ... if allowed. If you mean ssh or rlogin ... I think you can still do that from a command line if you have utilities installed, or you can just use rsh .... you can also use the VNC client : at least...

    The death of Microsoft

No you grow up. Go ahead and tell me why any company would be investing dollars in another round of $soft fee increases when they have an alternative. Moreover, I am just stating what I see in the market and yet I keep gettting people saying it isn't happening. It is and its going to be a big...

    The death of Microsoft

No grudge: I still work with their systems and with them. Just a reality statement about their business practices. You seem to be missing the point as well - there is no licensing practice with open source: its free. There are two paths that you can use to build your business infrastructure: the...

Those who cant come up with an argument often resort to such attacks....... Lt me guess: You live at your parents house and are going to junior college ? Good luck with that.

    The death of Microsoft

I think you are missing the point: Linux, LAMP, and eclipse are free as are the intermediate object servers. So, no, this is not the case - from an ongoing software developer:D

    C++, Visual C++ 6, Visual C++.net, C#

Typical problem: program loads, runs and then at some point bombs .... this usually happens when you hit the call to some type of object that was never properly instantiated . Usually the coder never tested for teh existance of the object before attempting to use it .... common problem and thats...

    The death of Microsoft

You are just plain wrong. I have been in the business for 25 years - including time working for $soft. Send me your money since you seem to want to throw it away on wasteful spending for your IT infrastructure. Obviously you dont have a corporate board to report to ..well maybe you do. You...

    The death of Microsoft

You should set up a pilot program to see if you can move some or all of your business onto Linux. When we started these tests over two years ago we were amazed: To date we have not found anything that $soft supplies that does not have an equivalent under opensource: we have saved...

    The death of Microsoft

I am sure they will move into other business area but their core OS and database will not survive based upon the current licensing and cost structure. They will modify it under competitive pressures. Probably when that happens Ballmer will be gone .....

    The death of Microsoft

The migration is being driven by $soft and others. The alternative is whole companies and departments moving off $soft. This is happening and they are not paying the per seat support costs suggested by others to Redhat or a similar entity. It is amazing how unfamiliar some of the posters here...

    The death of Microsoft

Uhh...... I am well aware of the licensing scheme and the budget and costs for major companies. Wrong. Like I said, whole internal organizations are bieng set up around alternatives to $soft and $racle systems... You need to get out more ....

    The death of Microsoft

Hang on .... I didn't say hobby. Some of the largest companies in the United States are running LINUX and the LAMP stack. Moreover, you dont know what you are talking about: there is a growing contingent of midsize and even large companies that are simply not paying the suggested "'support"...
