    Laptop 17" for trading

I use a HP dv9730us laptop. 17-inch screen. Bought at Fry's. About $800 or so in March 2008. Returned for service twice so far: September 2008: C drive (actually only one physical drive) completely hosed without warning. Blue screen death. They changed out the disk. January 2009...

    Notebook vs Desktop

How does a laptop drive 4 monitors? Oh... is it using the USB type of add-on gadget? I have both laptops and desktops. Laptop is okay. I just wish the screen can be bigger (I have a 17-in). I always attach an external mon to it. I can trade from any hotel room that gives me wifi or...

    Excel

I hate Excel (or Office) 2007. I just wish they keep things the same. No more the old-style menus. They do let you use the keyboard shortcut sequences (e.g. alt-E-C for copy, alt-E-P for paste, etc.) - if you remember the exact menu sequences. (No hint will be given.) But who the hell...

    Software Setup for Daytrading Equities

I do. I use TradeStation for (1) and (2). I think they have real-time market scans (your #3) for something like most active of the day, gap-up/down, etc.. I just have never used them. They allow you to do a "Radar Screen" to do custom scanning in real-time (e.g. Stock XYZ just goes above...

    Build or Buy?

I agree with "buy" over "build" - given the time we need to spend on hunting/trying/reconfiguring for different hardware. I would much rather go and grab a whatever brand desktop for this and that performance. Being a trader, we can get whatever money it takes to buy a desktop-PC in just one...

    Pictures of your trading stations

That's cool nkhoi! I remember that when I sold my last house, when hosting open houses people came in and saw my 3-monitor setup (relatively rare back in 2000) they all said wow. Imagine if they had seen yours!!! Now 52-inch plasma TVs are everywhere...

It's gotten pretty good in the summer. But think about the heating costs I have saved in the winter. LOL!

    Pictures of your trading stations

Why? Are we comparing the size of our wallets? LOL! I am only a tiny fish in the vast ocean. Let's say that I make comfortably better than a technology worker job. Which is why I quit. Added benefit: No more spending 2 hours everyday in senseless bumper-to-bumper commutes. And no...

    Pictures of your trading stations

Actually there is an advantage of keeping the big old sucker CRT monitors. Because they are so bulky, they jammed each other on the side. They kind of support each other so no one will fall off from the stand in the event of an earthquake. A few of the LCD mons are mounted on mono-mon arms.

Ha! Thank you for the compliment rodmike9. :D I tried very hard to compete for the "most messy trading setup" award! LOL.

What trading software/platform offers Market Profiling?

Hello all: I am currently using Schwab's StreetSmart Pro (formerly CyberTrader) trading platform. The platform's reliability is very poor. Schwab cannot handle fast markets. Whenever the market runs, StreetSmart Pro freezes up and I cannot cancel/modify orders. It's very bad. One...

    Pictures of your trading stations

This is my home-grown 17 screen trading setup. I aggregated to 17 screens over the years, not all in one shot. On a shoe-string budget. Whenever Fry's has some LCD monitors on sale, and I felt like it, I would go and get one. Mix and match. Different makes, different sizes, different...

A full screen dedicated to ET, Mr. J? Nice! :p :p Indeed. Great view to kill for! Make one think what we trade so hard for.

    Six Monitor Setup

16 monitors... 2 rows x 8 monitors sideway. LOL! How useful can they be if you need to walk up to the monitor on the far top left or top right to view the text display? You can read the 1/4 inch text detail from 4 feet away. Right! (Better grad your cordless keyboard and mouse with you...

    wi fi router question

I agree that sharing the wifi bandwidth on the same access point by 16 computers all running trading applications that require streaming data (and imagine if they all have multiple monitors and lots of charts) is very questionable. Plus the added security concern. Also the signal strength...

    Comcast ,,|,,(-_-),,|,,

They are using Comcast Digital voice service in their call center, of course! LOL! One time a Comcast sales rep called me to promote their Digital voice service. I told him flat out: No way in hell! When your cable service is out, not only would it take out my Internet connection, it now...

new laptop with built in dual screen

I think this added little extra screen is not worth the money spent on having it for trading purposes.

    Build or Buy?

I am on a shoestring budget. I don't want to spend $2000-$3000 to buy modified desktops for trading with multiple monitors. I shopped around for new desktops recently at Fry's. Beware that many of the new boxes from HP or others have very limited expansion slots. Most don't support PCI bus...

    Back up Cable, internet?

Thanks for the bit of history, OldTrader. You are right. We should saveguard ourselves as much as possible and as much as practical. The only way to saveguard against Globex out, it seems, is to have a brokerage firm that can do pit trades. This may not be an issue in the future when pit...
