    Day Trading stocks with IB

I use IB and I've had no problems with NYSE market orders after 3:40PM. Had fills as late as 3:59:45 this week. MOC is the only order constrained after 3:40.

    What's up with Brinker?

I agree with Smitty. I send everyone looking for investment advice to Bob with the caveat to avoid his "trades" or specific stock recommendations. That QQQ trade showed he's only adept at longer term portfolio allocation and has no business "trading". It's really fascinating to watch how many...

    IB and ecbot

Just because Esignal works and IB doesn't does not automatically mean IB is bad. Last year I had the opposite problem, Esignal lagged IB by several seconds for the ES during heavy market activity. I bitched at Esignal and they told me that the data vendors get a different feed from the exchange...

Visiting Chicago - CME or CBOT floor tour?

Puffy, Yeah I could do that, but then I'd feel obliged to take in a Cubs game, which isn't possible. Swing batter batter swing! The public viewing window is my fallback if that's the best I can do. RCREAL, I trade electronically through IB. Not sure if they'd be of any help. Guess I...

Visiting Chicago - CME or CBOT floor tour?

I'm going to be in Chicago around the 23rd of Feb. Anyone with access to the CME or CBOT floor willing to give me an insider's tour? I'll buy dinner or lunch. PM me if interested.

Do odd lot order sizes hurt?

If you're trading NYSE stocks through IB, note that there are restrictions. Generally speaking, odd lots with limit orders are not routed to NYSE. So you will lose that advantage. Whenever I trad an odd lot through smart it gets routed to ISLD or ARCA. Very annoying. "Orders to open a new...

    Pre & Post Market Trading

I've had a bad trade busted on ISLD premarket. Someone was flashing between 20.40 bid and 23.40 bid. I hit 23.40 (I thought) and hit transmit before I realized it was 20.40. Never asked for a bust before, but it was no problem. I didn't even get charged for the bust but it's the only one I've...

    health care

Mav, I agree with your probability point of view, but still disagree with your risk management philosophy. I think you should insure whatever risks you cannot afford the hit if you lose. After all, even insurance companies lay off risk to other insurers. Health insurance is an obvious...

Do you pay Health Insurance out of your profits?

I pay about $90/month for a $5000 deductible PPO. Would be much less except that my wife is a smoker and I was honest on the application. I've got an appeal in since she doesn't smoke in the house or car. My wife gets her insurance through her employer, but it was not worthwhile adding me...

    Sun Valley, Idaho?

I'm in Boise! Sun Valley is cool too. I personally think the resort skiing in SV is overrated, but the mtn biking, x-country skiing and backcountry skiing are all excellent. The trail systems for biking and x-country skiing are world class. I've given some thought to moving there but can't...

    The next big thing

Tea, I think commodity indexing is interesting. Have you looked at some of the index futures offered? What are your thoughts on them? I've looked at them from the point of view of having a portion of them in my portfolio in them since they are negatively correlated to equities. However...

Best Place to trade in the world - Quality of Life

Regarding Moab a few pages back. Visiting that place is awesome (I go there to mtn bike at least once a year), but living there? NO WAY! You are in a tiny (a few thousand people) island of coolness surrounded by a vast ocean of social wasteland called Utah. If you are a loner that wants to...

    What is your ES/NQ/YM leverage

A lot of this is so dependent on the time frame you are trading. But for trading intraday, my absolute minimum is $6300/ES contract and that's only if I'm going balls to the wall, max position size, which rarely happens. I get this number based on the overnight margin of the ES plus the...

Visual basic 6 vs VB. NET

Speaking as a complete newbie to VB, 3 weeks ago I bought VB.net basic and found that the IB sample program was written for VB6 and when I tried to "upgrade" it, the Microsoft utility would crash because one of the components was not licensed for the basic version of VB6. Apparently you need the...

Do you tell people you're a trader?

The term "index futures" is the key. I always make sure it is in my description. People either give me a blank look and change the subject or they are genuinely interested and a good conversation follows. If people don't understand the term, it's harder for them to jump to the "gambler" image.

Finally, someone RIPS Cramer on CNBC

Gaj, He did start off poorly and last year he had bad absolute numbers, but good relative to my index fund (VTSMX). I guess it's all in your expectations. If you expect him to make you money month in and month out forget it. But like I said earlier, stocks I own via his service are just...

Finally, someone RIPS Cramer on CNBC

I've been a reader since '99. I agree with you in part. His "off the cuff" stuff that he puts in his articles in RM is not to be trusted. He's thinking out loud and I'm not sure he's thought things all the way through. But I can't argue with his results in his action alerts plus service...

Finally, someone RIPS Cramer on CNBC

I admit Cramer is annoying at times and I think he's a closet republican that is little more than Kudlow's yes man on their show....BUT I've run part of my equity portfolio based on his service and last year I beat my index holdings by 3.8% and this year I'm ahead by 12.6% after commissions...

    Backtesting Question

MaxPi, I've tried tweaking by recent data only and it doesn't seem to work as well. It seems like whatever settings were recently "hot" usually stop being so. I've thought about trying to set up an oscillator for my settings, playing the longer term settings against the short term settings, but...

    Backtesting Question

You are correct about forward testing vs out of sample testing. Actually, I've been trading it since May with good results.... until a drawdown in August. Drawdowns are always unnerving and it was while I was in the process of making sure the drawdown was normal (it was) that I got myself...
