HFT, and is backtesting helpful or harmful?

My desk had 40+ traders. Some of which have been trading for 8-10 years and were very profitable traders. All gone now except for 2 guys. Kaput. The financial crisis and the subsequent market environment pretty much carried all of them out. 1 of them whom I know still daytrading is very...

HFT? Forget about HFT, it's now..HIT.

Laws are determined by men. If you are a small trader and capture an anomaly to your advantage, guess what? SEC makes it illegal. If you are a corporation with deep pockets and friends in the SEC, nope nothing illegal about that. Just superior technology and intelligence.

SEC to Congress: Nonsense, the markets are not rigged.

Superior strategies or technologies? Regardless of whether it is legal or not, the notion that you need significant technological and capital outlay for this kind of operations cannot be disputed. What is sad is that you are cheering the death of the small trader, the dream that anyone can make...

As I have said, I used to trade the small caps too for many years and six figures were just about the norm. Actually I think we might have a similar strategy. Since 2009 things have started to simply "disappear", I tried to transition to very liquid stuff using a completely diff strat with...

New book on how traders are beating the HFT guys

Most people who I know that backtest are not profitable traders. They spend their lives backtesting. Those that are profitable and actually trade, usually test it out with small size and work from there. No backtesting required or needed. The market is the test.

Massive surge in trading volumes, say brokers.

I think I have mentioned this to Bob before as well. I used to trade small cap equities and it's hard to get filled nowadays. If you get filled, it goes against you and stops you out. It's called lose-lose. Secondly, sectors have become very correlated to the broader index. Various sectors...

New book on how traders are beating the HFT guys

That's what we used to do back in the days. Trade where the action is, find buyer and seller, bid/offer up/down hundreds of times, add to position, etc. But you are one of the rares ones that have made it thus far. Most people at my firm who traded like that left in 2009-2012. They are just...
