    HFT Myths

Freedinner - you have a lot of good ideas, but your model has a single point of failure. How many times have some technical glitch shut down some exchange for a few hours? If that happens across the close, all sorts of people will be unhappy. Multiple exchanges have their problems with...

The Puerto Rico Tax Break can only make sense for Futures/FX Traders

The old rules were low rates on long term gains only. The newer rules apply to both long and short term gains. Beware of gains accrued before moving, but that doesn't matter much for traders.

New performance metric - Could I get your help?

I did 100. I think my preference was first for consistency (on a short term scale, small fluctuations), and then secondary factors were things like smaller/fewer drawdowns, consistency on longer scales (fewer periods of chop vs modest profitability), and, when there were larger periods of...

ETNs no longer eligible for portfolio margining

Retail people lose money and complain, media picks up sob stories about Evil Banks and their complex ETNs that are "designed to fail", and FINRA feels the heat. Like most regulators, their logic goes like this: Something must be done! This (regulation) is something. It must be done...

    Question about Margin

Your understanding is correct. IB's margin rates are much much lower than any of the retail brokerages, and they drop for higher margin balances. For example, over $1M in margin balance, IB charges 0.58% on the marginal dollars borrowed. When I have a sufficiently good opportunity, I have...

Markets are infested with Insider Trading

Read the details from the paper, not the media summary: http://www.elitetrader.com/vb/showthread.php?t=282362 The academics found numerous examples of blatant violations of the SEC trading policies, as well as good statistical evidence that insider trading was going on despite the...

How does market makers prevent against adverse selection?

Single stock risk is always there - sudden good or bad news, etc, that someone else knows before you do. The best you can do is diversify across stocks. Broad market risk like the Fed, up or down markets, etc, can be hedged with other instruments pretty well.
