    Philosophy behind trading Commodity Futures

Just to illustrate that sales is a totally different mentality than investing or trading... In a recent episode of a British TV show The Apprentice, Alan Sugar (the renound entrepreneur who is choosing an "apprentice") passionately argues that not making money for a couple of hours is reason for...

    Interactive Brokers API

Where existing platforms provide advantage is charting. Implemeting differnet types of charts, scaling, nice presentaion of axes, manual application of trendlines etc is a massive amount of work. Indicator libraries are a lot fo work too but there are a few free ones available. Backtesting...

Lightspeed Stops - do they work? Plz help me!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't use lightspeed but I have explanation for this. First, it tracks a number of venues where the stocks are traded. So, on Tradestation or eSignal you may not see the same prices teh platform sees. I appreciate that peopel who are aware of how Lightspeed work may be "stop-hunting" by...

    Philosophy behind trading Commodity Futures

I think at the moment you are thinking like a trader. "You loose a litle money here, make a little there. Come out at about break-even." Retail is a differnet mentality. Lots of retailers are in the cituation where running costs (like renting a shop and paying the staff) consume a large part...

    Philosophy behind trading Commodity Futures

Haha, very good point! I guess the fact that wholesale gasoline price went down 20% or so but retailers are not in rush to lower their prices is what soem refer to as "gouging" in the other thread :) Thanks for the illustration of why price volatility means retailer need higher mark-up...

    Philosophy behind trading Commodity Futures

As I explain in a different thread, high volatility results in higher consumer prices too. So, it largely doesn't matter in which direction speculators drive prices ;) The reason politicians don't credit speculators with falling commodity prices is they are busy taking credit themselves.

    Philosophy behind trading Commodity Futures

I understand the limits are only applicable to futures, not the underlying commodity. In addition, although intorduction of position limits was legislated in 2009, CFTC intends to implement position limits on oil only in 2012 (that is assuming no further delays occur)...

    Philosophy behind trading Commodity Futures

Just to elaborate on what Heech wrote... You *CAN* live without energy. This would through civilization a hundred years back... but you can. Further, energy is "generic". There are lots of replacements for oil. A number of cars use natural gas or electricity (which in turn is mostly produced...

    Philosophy behind trading Commodity Futures

This explanation ignores the fact that a number of speculators do store the underlying commodity in expectation of price growth. They would rent a few ships, fill them with oil and put these offshore for a year or more.

    New Bloomberg Backtesting Functionality

Thanks for posting a review! On bars Amibroker is an order of magnitude faster than any other backtesting software I have experienced. I understand it's because backtests of strategies written in Amibroker Formula Language can be coverted into matrix algebra, for which there are very...

what do you guys think about the term 'gouging'?

I could follow the original link alright. No problem. However, I think high petrol prices are not a "catastroph". Expensive petrol is there to stay. So, if a specific industry (such as gas stations) makes excessive profit, it's not price gouging, it's a cartel or collusion.

70% Of Fed Loans To Foreign Banks!

First, you don't need that much money to join the race for Congress or even Senate. It's the actual campaign that is expensive. So, it's again up to the voters. Do they favour someone on the basis of the candidate's views and track record? Or do they vote for someone who sent the most...

70% Of Fed Loans To Foreign Banks!

The kind of do have a choice when they vote for politicians who approve financial deregulation. It's not an anonymous group of reclusive bankers, it's teh congress who voted for repeal of Glass-Steagall act and for allowing banks into the money market and even for the creation of Fed itself...

what do you guys think about the term 'gouging'?

First, yes. They are seeking to assign blame... and some are trying to divert attention from other factors that contributed to increase in pertrol prices... such as speculators buying oil and storing it offshore on ships in expectation of further price increase. Second, those politicians are...

70% Of Fed Loans To Foreign Banks!

The following article has a lot of "kind" words about the act http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/ContrarianChronicles/blame-reagan-for-our-financial-mess.aspx "The seeds of this bubble were sown way back in 1980 when Congress passed the Depository Institutions Deregulation and...

    Does Level 3 exist?

I wish that was as easy to do as it is to say! However, the good point is one doesn't have to wait for the stop to be hit to exit a trade.

    Does Level 3 exist?

Level 3 exists... but it's not the ability to see stop orders. A number of market participants just know from experience and psychology where typical stop orders are clustered: just below support/above resistance, just below a trendline etc. If you see this as a problem, think of where you...
