Failed hedge fund manager goes into teaching investing

OP is hinting that there is more money to be made teaching investing/trading (teaching fees are sure win, no risk) than actually doing investing/trading (no risk, no gain). Of course, respect goes to the practitioners who made it.

    IBKR

Not true. Robinhood provides free commission for their customers. IBKR, however cheap their commission, cannot compete with free Robinhood, at least in terms of price. I know of many millennials recommending Robinhood as their broker for buying U.S stocks.

    Server changing IBKR

I had to write in customer support to request server change.

Has commodities trading become harder due to machine trading today?

You're right. I wonder what he saw that readers of the articles missed out.

Has commodities trading become harder due to machine trading today?

One more commodity hedge fund bites the dust. Same excuse. Machines are distorting the commodity markets and making the lives of fund managers more difficult. I don't trade commodities. However, I find it hard to accept his excuse. If machines distort the markets and make them diverge from...

    Fixed Income Forum

Corporate bonds can be purchased electronically through IB platform. I have done this with around 10k with paper trading account to test out. Don't need access to top tier banks.

Which were some brokers with technical problems during this week of market chaos with high volume?

If the objective is to buy, having a second broker helps. However, if the main concern is in not being able to sell out the equities held in custody, having a second broker is not helpful. The equities are held in custody. Customers can only sell out using the same broker through which equities...

Just to thank you, and regrettably say goodbye

Makes sense if he is the outdoors type. Most successful traders/investors I know are introverts, though.

Just to thank you, and regrettably say goodbye

Hopefully, that is what happened but if that happened to me, I will spend even more time on ET. Why quit ET? It's not a job that one hates.

Just to thank you, and regrettably say goodbye

Sorry to hear you leaving. I understand your need for privacy. If it is a health problem, you may want to spend all your remaining time with your family and cut down the time spent on ET. We're all strangers to you. If it is a massive trading loss, this is where ET members can help. Not with...

Lost full Nikkei product range on IB

Quite a scary problem if a trader owns Nikkei futures, wants to get out but not able to, particularly on a crash day like 6Feb2018.

Side effects of futures trading during opening given absence of index arbitrage outside regular hrs

Nothing against them at all. Just trying to understand things. Being curious. That's it. I'm still a newbie with a track record of losing money in trading index futures today.

Side effects of futures trading during opening given absence of index arbitrage outside regular hrs

I am trying to wrap my head around this with textbook knowledge. Index futures trade outside the regular hours of stocks. During Asian hours, ES trades but U.S stock exchange is closed. During these non-US hours, index arbitrage cannot be done. ES price can diverge a lot from the underlying...

Hedge Fund Quant Manoj Narang Losing 8% Highlights Industry Woes

Not necessarily so. Jack Schwager appeared on that podcast too. I think many elitetraders here read his Market Wizard books. He certainly is not a con-man.

Hedge Fund Quant Manoj Narang Losing 8% Highlights Industry Woes

Another convincing evidence why most investors should stick to passive investing in S&P500. No efforts needed, no brains needed. Why pay so much to hedge fund investors who underperform cheap indices? The world will be better off if those ultra-smart hedge fund mathematicians and scientists go...

    Ubuntu Linux or Windows 10?

I personally stick to Windows 10 to save myself trouble and time fixing software incompatibility issues with Ubuntu. Time is worth lots of money too!

    Jon Corzine's new hedge fund

I thought the assets would have been sold out since they were bought with leverage. Much like what IB would auto-liquidate our assets which were bought on leverage. Interesting to know how MF Global avoided the European assets liquidation by its creditors.

What do you think about: "going pro" account size?

Exactly. Why pay for a label? I would rather pay cheap as a non-pro even if I can earn like a pro if the price of that is to be called a non-pro.

    Which Reuters Product?

In that case, the cheaper Reuters offerings would be enough for stocks. Reuters products also have analytics and it is hard to justify Bloomberg higher price. It's not as if Bloomberg has the obvious superior analytics. Maybe if one is into fixed income as well as stocks, Bloomberg might make a...

How does study of Philosophy help in trading/investing?

Many of the world's top investors/traders had Philosophy degrees. They are none other than George Soros, Carl Icahn, Bill Miller ... Philosophy graduates have hard time of finding jobs because Philosophy as a subject has little practical applications unlike STEM subjects. Yet, so many of the...
