What's the Big Deal About Portfolio Margin?

It all depends on how you trade. If you ever want to sell options naked, do reverse calendars, or try to gamma scalp effectively (to name a few things) then PM or trading at a prop firm would be the way to go. If you just buy options or do strategies where the Reg-T margin is reasonable then...

Jimmy, If you trade one contract per $5000, then that would be 40% per month ROI. A mere 50k account turns into about 3 million in one year if you compound once per month. Just wondering how long you have been making 40% per month? I am not saying you aren't, just curious.

    SPX index options

Having traded orders with hundreds of contracts for my own account and thousands of contracts professionally in the SPX, I can tell you that the market makers are simply stealing as much as they can for as long as they can. Even with large orders you never get a "good" price, you can only hope...

    Lose NOT Loose... :)

Is that what the problem is? How about: who, whom to, too implied, inferred I constantly see these mistakes on this site.

Too funny. It hits my target almost exactly and I got out pre-open. Oh well.

I guess I have been reading this thread too long. It is not that hard to follow Spectre (if you have the inclination to do so). With appropriate deference to Heisenberg, I may be changing his behavior by identifying it. Generally speaking: when he posts simple and straightforward then that is...

Support for the market on the 13th, 14th, 17th, and 18th was about 1485. Recent high was 1552, so a 38.2% retracement is almost exactly our current bottom of 1526.50. If they can't hold that the logical point would be the 50% of 1518.50.

Any reason for 1483? I see a 38.2% retracement from recent high 1504.25 and recent low 1453.50 at about 1484.75 and some support at 1484.25 from Wed's swing low and Thur's pre open low.

Wow didn't realize I would bruise so many delicate egos. That was not my intention. From some information I had I was thinking that Apex might not bother posting here anymore if he felt that his posts were not wanted. Therefore I simply asked anyone who did appreciate his posts, for whatever...

Volente and Spectre, I will completely agree with both of you that a trader looking to just follow along or looking for simple, easy answers will fail in the end. Furthermore I appreciate you guys trying to point out this potential pitfall to new traders. I will, however, try to be more...

Cleary you are missing the point. There is a very large and important distinction between those with their own completely developed, consistently profitable trading systems who apparently come here out of boredom or to stroke their own ego, and those new to the short term futures trading game...

    20:1 leverage on stocks possible?

For 20 to 1 leverage you have to go prop (Assent, Bright, Echo, Vtrader) you cannot get it at retail. Even with portfolio margin the most retail can give you is 6.6 to 1. As has been said call the firms and find the best fit for you, and make sure you ask about comms, long and short interest...

    SPX Credit Spread Trader

I don't want to corrupt the thread but here is a little info on PM. Portfolio margin gives the broker the opportunity to allow a customer to have the same Haircut requirement as a market maker on the floor. Rather surprising but there is almost no difference between the minimum margin for a...

    Portfolio Margin at ThinkorSwim

Well it is finally here. TOS is now putting traders on portfolio margin. We will have to wait and see how things play out and whether they make changes to it. I wonder what the max number of naked index Puts I call sell is? Just kidding.

No they don't. I wouldn't hold my breath; their clearing firm does not even handle futures options yet. I am sure they will eventually get them but the time frames they give out are always overly optimistic.
