If you are using Linux/Unix, who is your stock data vendor?

I second that. VMWare workstation works really well.

If you are using Linux/Unix, who is your stock data vendor?

a simple answer might be to run XEN on Ubuntu, and simply run an XP VM for the quotes. Edit: i run all but my realtime quotes and TWS on Ubuntu/64 now.

    Notice of Possible Buy-Inþ- IB

My personal experience is that IB runs all of this in real-time. The most notice I've had is to the close of the day i got the notice. But i have no way to tell if the inventory went away 2 days ago. I'm sure that you don't get to initiate the short if they cannot locate. That I experience...

    Notice of Possible Buy-Inþ- IB

I must be missing something, but here is how it works: You short ABC on Monday and IB locates the stock for you. The holder of ABC closes out the position on Tuesday. You get a notice to cover on Tuesday. How could IB know on Monday that the holder of ABC would sell on Tuesday? If IB...

    Notice of Possible Buy-Inþ- IB

I've had that happen. IB needs to locate stock from their inventory, and if the locate closes the position, you may be forced to cover. IB is very aggressive about not allowing non-located shorting, probably due to all the new regulation this past fall.

Vista x64 or XP Pro 32bit?

We had a laptop with problems that HP finally agreed to replace. When deciding on OS for the new laptop, the service supervisor strongly suggested 32 bit Vista vs 64 bit. He said that 64 bit vista caused more support problems than anything he'd ever seen. That being said, I have a Vista 64...

Dilemma in modeling idiosyncratic high-frequency noise

I guess it's a matter of preference. I prefer to spend my time understanding underlying structure, and build a simple statistical model of the residual noise. I'm not sure it's worth focusing on the noise, but I could be wrong, of course.

Dilemma in modeling idiosyncratic high-frequency noise

I'm not sure there's much value in trying to decipher the "cause" of the noise. Why not simply create a model of it, and use that on a moving forward basis?

    IB's TWS on USB key

get yourself one of the new netbooks. I got a dell mini9, and it's great for traveling and remote trading. Full XP, and just add drive encryption for improved privacy, should you lose the netbook.

    Blackberry or IPHONE

I suggest one of the new "mini" netbooks. Very light, and full XP. Ideal for traveling and remote trading.

Microsoft asked to lay off 10% employees

this is not news. Microsoft does a "rank and yank" yearly. Normally it's 5% though. Most well run companies do this annually since it's simpler than firing people one at a time and cuts back on age discrimination lawsuits etc.

I don't know about his eminiz service, but his published books and systems are solid, imo.

    VPN/IKE problem with Netgear

I have a Netgear VPN problem that I've been unable to resolve. I'm using the Netgear VPN-client software on XP against the Netgear router/firewall/VPN device. All on latest rev. During phase 2 of IKE, the client generates the following error: "QM re-keying timed out. Retry count 1"...

    Characteristics of a Successful Trader

I'd like to thank Eric for starting this thread. I happen to have known Eric personally for the last ~ 4 years, and can say that he's one of the people who've affected my trading the most. He's been generous with his time and offered assistance on many occasions. I strongly recommend that anyone...

Why do the Mods defend a fraud like Jack Hershey

since it's close to Christmas, I'll take that as a complement :) But seriously, I have never been asked to favor or edit content from any particular participant, sponsor or vendor. As ETs history has shown, some of the moderators have gone through their learning experience "in public". I...

Impossible to find a real pro with a real edge as a mentor?

Maybe a bit off the original thread title: In my experience I need to have a "system" to trade. One can choose to automate the system or trade it manually, but unless there is underlying methodology with a statical edge, I don't see how anyone can make money over time. For me, automating has...
