High Speed Trading Unfair To Retail Traders

You seems to know something about this issue, so I thought I'd ask more specifically. At least the article says: "a loophole in regulations allows marketplaces like Nasdaq to show traders some orders ahead of everyone else in exchange for a fee." Indicating that these are displayed orders...

High Speed Trading Unfair To Retail Traders

In the NYTimes article I found a quote that I find somewhat disturbing: " a loophole in regulations allows marketplaces like Nasdaq to show traders some orders ahead of everyone else in exchange for a fee." Does this really mean that Nasdaq is "selling" information on my order before it...

Traders who win but really have no clear strategy

As someone who used to trade the SP (the floor traded SP500) with phone and "gut feel" I found that to be incredibly stressful. While i had some high level guides, such as $tick, $tran etc every day was new. Ultimately, I couldn't shake the concern that I somehow just were lucky and that I...

In which type of systems do you trade in?

I try to diversify both over time frames and frequency. I'm most active in intraday system, but have systems that have held positions as long as 18 months.

POLL: Did your trading improve from shortening your time frame or from lengthening it

In my experience, it's strategy specific. I have some strategies that work best in seconds to minutes, and other that takes hours to play out. Only realtime trading (and testing) will show which is the case for a particular strategy.

    list of filters

For many types of intraday systems you can improved your average trade by only taking longs when the price > 50-dayMA. Converse for shorts Alternatively, size differently depending on relation to the 50 day MA.

Attn Baron: upgrade your software to allow for self moderation of threads!

I'm not sure why you'd say that. At least EricP has posted several times in the P&L thread. Here is the one I found after less than 30 seconds of searching. http://www.elitetrader.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&postid=2078776#post2078776 There are several others. My last comment on this issue.

Attn Baron: upgrade your software to allow for self moderation of threads!

EricP is the most successful trader I know. He's given much over the years to ET, but somehow recently there's always a resident idiot or two feeling they have to argue/criticize every little thing he posts. I understand why he no longer cares to participate.

3 alternatives I am faced with

In my case, I'd prefer to go to the beach, but I'm still not convinced that I have programmed all possible things that can go wrong. If my trading software went crazy it could lose extraordinary amounts of money very quickly. So, I sit and look at it while I play with new concepts (system ideas)...

    High Probability ETF Trading

Just curious: Where do you get this criteria from? To "give a bit" in return, here is another reasonable criteria, imo average-trade - stdev(all trades) > 0

IB Trader: Warning – IB will cancel your GTC order

I think this is fairly common, fwiw. I know that Fidelity also cancels after about 90 days.

How Powerful is the Subconscious Mind?

In my experience, it's easier to do "dumb" things when stressed or not feeling well. One of my turning points in trading was to accept that I (unless I caught myself), at times would override/change live systems because I "knew better". To counter-act that, I chose to watch my pulse whenever...

Best Prop Firms For A Beginner

Just to clarify the "benefits": Other than access to your capital, I have the same "benefits" trading retail: direct access routing, MTM accounting (if I so choose), and exception from FICA.

    Best Programming Language

I'd recommend Java if you ever want to switch to e.g. Linux. On Windows, Visual Basic is probably the easiest. I know of large deployments of trading software written in both Java and VB. I happen to favor Java since it's a bit more structured.

    Different systems for different instruments

In my experience it's acceptable that a particular model only works on a subset of markets. I have no expectation that my ES/NQ systems works on bonds and currencies for instance. But I *do* expect that a system designed for e.g. semi conductors, should work well across a broad portfolio...

    emotion control and stress relief?

The emwave works well. I've had one for more than a year, and use it from time to time.

Is it possible for my employer to find my personal futures account

You most likely gave your employer the right to do a background check when you got hired, so they'll simply get your credit report. That will list any brokerage account you have. Likewise, your broker will report your account to the credit agencies. Unless you are counting on your employer...

Any traders getting together at the LA/Pasadena Trader's Expo?

A bit to my surprise, this was the best expo I've ever attended. Very good presentations (but maybe i know which ones not to attend), and overall very informative. My favorite was a one hour presentation by John Ehlers. He is full of solid concepts and a very good presenter. I was also...

    Tibco

Nitro, I agree. Today I can't think of any reason to run Tibco. 5-8 years ago they were pretty much the only "low latency" game in town. Ultimately, the type of failover and redundancy that Tibco provided were often easily added in the application domain.

    Tibco

One of the features of TIBCO that everyone liked was the ability to run redundant processing over their middleware; ie TIBCO could run a 2nd system in virtual lockstep which is great for "software fault tolerance" and failover. That's pretty much the only reason I ever heard from anyone with...
