Chicago just approved one of the US's largest basic-income pilots: $500 monthly payments for 5,000 p

Some do need guidance and have mental capacity issues, many others do not. It sounds like we agree at a minimum that those who just happen to be poor, through a variety of circumstances that have nothing to do with their mental capacity, would be better served by UBI than the paternalistic...

Chicago just approved one of the US's largest basic-income pilots: $500 monthly payments for 5,000 p

Oh hell yeah we do. Inheritance tax basis step-up, generation skipping trusts, "peanut buttering" the QSBS...the list goes on of how taxpayers pay for trust fund babies. But even all that aside, even if one believes that how we treat a person exhibiting a certain behavior set should depend on...

I'm not sure what I am asserting has anything to do with character or not. Here, let me do this for you and let me know what specifically in it you disagree with. Again you're right, those trust fund babies shouldn't be allowed to get away with bad decisions and should all be one bad decision...

OK, substitute "decision making capacity" in place of "laziness" in everything I just typed. What does it change?

Again you're right, those trust fund babies shouldn't be allowed to get away with bad decisions and should all be one bad decision away from being cut off from all their funds. Your concern about laziness, tax burden on the rest of us, and punishment for bad decisions on this group of lazy...

Chicago just approved one of the US's largest basic-income pilots: $500 monthly payments for 5,000 p

I know, there are plenty of trust fund babies out there living on daddy's money when they did absolutely nothing to earn it. And in fact a good chunk of it is courtesy us taxpayers thanks to step-up basis and trust rules that ensure it comes to them tax free. So you're right to question those...

Chicago just approved one of the US's largest basic-income pilots: $500 monthly payments for 5,000 p

Don't forget the speaker of the House for 36 of the past 38 years who resigned last year under pressure for blatant corruption that he should be in jail for as well but just isn't yet. That said, Madigan's corruption was a rounding error in the state budget, and most of those governors as well...

Chicago just approved one of the US's largest basic-income pilots: $500 monthly payments for 5,000 p

Ah, now I understand what you were trying to say. If you go back to the entire premise of the concept, it is that it is a better way to deal with poverty than existing programs. That's certainly debatable, but obviously the folks doing it think it will be and hence potentially it could end up...

Chicago just approved one of the US's largest basic-income pilots: $500 monthly payments for 5,000 p

I think we all know about Chicago's pension woes. I don't see anything there about this specific program "missing" from the budget though. I work with cities and states pretty extensively, the state of IL is a client as it happens, and it would be exceedingly rare for a public program to exist...

    Inflation stocks

Take a look at what a TIPS is doing for you right now though, they're all giving negative yield. Short dated TIPS are giving you -5% negative yield!

Since the capital gains rate is zero for single taxpayers with income up to $41,675, most of the crypto fan bois don't have to worry about it anyway:)

    Deep ITM Covered Calls Question

You may have been attributing the assignment to something you observed that wasn't actually the cause; correlation≠causation. Mathematically the only reason for a call to be exercised early is as @FSU stated when there is a dividend or hard to borrow situation. Nothing to do whatsoever with...

Tax implications of spending your Bitcoin.

The option to lie on your taxes has always been available for millions of people paid in cash, and for at least tens of thousands of people who buy things like art, wine, or overseas property where they self report their basis and sales price. Some of them lie, others don't. But this certainly...

    Question about wash sale rules....

Wash sale rules apply to options trades as well. Incidentally they can also apply to trades of options and the underlying stock for those options, i.e. one leg a stock sale and one an option. Easiest to just stop trading on the last day of Nov and resume Jan 1st, or the last day of Dec and...

    Question about wash sale rules....

The basis isn't actually something they report at all, so it's just a courtesy if they do the adjustment for you and YMMV between brokers.
