Dilemma in creating a system ...

here's one article to give you more clues... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_A._Cohen Stevie undoubtedly employes both an analytical component to his trading (mostly for risk management) as well as a discretionary one (mostly for his entries).

    Automated trading systems

EXACTLY. Tradestation has about 2 MAN-YEARS of built-in indicators or functions. If you start-from-scratch with Java or C++ RIGHT NOW, you'll be where Tradestation 8.1 is in 2 years. This assumes however, that you NEED all of those functions or indicators. If not, then the time-frame may...

Dilemma in creating a system ...

I'll chime in here: Mech Trading is dumb, Discretionary Trading is psycho.....180 degree opposites. If anyone can find the "sweet spot" in-between the two disciplines, then you've found the "Holy Grail".

    Can bad ticks trip stops?

This is definitely a problem for Nasdaq NNM stocks....I see this all of the time....and the Lightspeed platform I am using does not differentiate these "prints" other than to highlight them differently if outside of the BBO. IMHO, multiple approaches are needed to effectively program automatic...

Too many Doomsday predictions for there to be one.

Exactly. Sept 20th looming as a HUGE trading day with volatility jumping to climatic levels. Fed does not raise: Huge rally, followed by huge decline Fed raises 1/4: mini-crash, followed by huge rally. Be nimble, BE QUICK !

Any1 know any good NASDAQ stocks.

Certain "staid" Naz 100 stocks like CSCO, MSFT, ORCL, etc. are range-bound and choppy. Best to go after liquid "movers": RIMM ERTS AAPL EBAY YHOO QLGC QCOM BRCM KLAC ADBE (lately) SIRI (lately) XMSR (lately) and yes, watch for the stocks with high "trade rates" (ticks per...

Have the skills, but lost and all alone.

Amen Brother. I've been at it 3 years and counting...still awaiting that glorious piece of code that will immortalize me ! It's a humbling experience to try to "beat" the market CONSISTENTLY with "dumb" software. I've got a client list of several who have been "leveled" over the past 3 years...

    Bears had their chance

Apple bulls....no question, today's late trade action VERY impressive. But ya gotta ask yourself a couple of questions: 1) is a slow-growth economy with less discretionary consumer spending going to eventually "hit" AAPL ? 2) is DELL's demise really to AAPL's advantage ? or is the entire P/C...

    Prop Trading and Stock Selection

Regarding the first statement: breakouts and momentum systems get crushed in range-bound markets like the current one. The classic "Donchian" break-out system has been getting killed on an intraday basis especially. Even Keith Fitschen's presentation of "Developing Tradeable Systems" indicates...

It's been 2 years since I turned CNBC on...Cramer was on!

Cramer has been a HUGE success since the June 2005 "run-up". What happens if we "run down" ? I still remember his $350 target for GOOG. Are we there yet ?

Champion - don't discourage the boy....several hedge funds are doing quite well with fully automated approaches. (Of course, we have the venerable John Henry who began this mech-approach years ago and he is down HUGE lately). No question however, we may be years (decades ?) away from the time...

    Your thoughts on Tradecision

Take a look at Tradestation ( http://www.tradestation.com )... unfortunately, you are kinda stuck to their brokerage fees, but there is some software that will generate orders to Interactive Brokers via API. The coding is much easier than Wealthlab, plus there are a ton of built-in strategies...

You've been hinting at INTEGRATION between charting, analytical, and order-entry platforms. Guess what ? IT AIN'T HAPPENING. I use QCharts for charting/analytics, Lightspeed for order-entry.....THEY DON'T CONNECT. NEVER WILL. It's WAR out there in Wallstreet Land right now.....everyone...

    Algorithmic Trading

While this is all good stuff to discuss and cogitate over, actually DOING IT is an entirely different matter. I've built a few trading systems over the past few years, and one characteristic that was obvious: duration of trade. The shorter the trade duration, the higher the percentage of...

Why believe him alone ? Technically, chart was horrible.....7.60, previously support, became huge resistance. Past 3 days it was slammed there several times.... Next level was 7.40 and that too was taken-out easily.

    Top 30 traders under 30

re: "electric power futures" ? and that "under-30 list" showed very, very few U.S. Equity traders.....mostly exotics, derivatives, interest rates, forex, etc.. Anyone pick-up on that ? Anyone notice that Trader Monthly has not shown ONE US Equity trader on the front cover yet ?
