    IRS is getting desperate......

I tend to agree. Ineffective or outdated laws should be repealed as opposed to going unenforced. We would probably see this happen more often if our government wasn't so dysfunctional. I've heard that FATCA has only brought in a fraction of what it was expected to, but I've never seen an overall...

    IRS is getting desperate......

We should, at least in some instances. There's a big difference between a law that's designed to protect the public, and a tax law that's designed to generate revenue. It seems highly illogical to have a tax law on the books that costs significantly more to enforce than the revenue it brings in...

    Learn to wait

"I just wait until there is money lying in the corner, and all I have to do is go over there and pick it up. I do nothing in the meantime." - Jim Rogers

    Impeachment hearings

The POTUS has the ability to open an investigation into anyone they choose, regardless of intent. I don't think it's a question about legality, but rather whether or not it was an abuse of power. I doubt we'll ever see a sitting president removed based off of allegations of abuse of power unless...

    Impeachment hearings

I believe you're correct. This is a quote from the Mueller report: "no judicial decision has treated the voluntary provision of uncompensated opposition research or similar information as a thing of value that could amount to a contribution under campaign-finance law." I don't condone the...

    Impeachment hearings

Can you cite one instance in the history of our country where courts have ruled that information is considered a thing of value in reference to this law? A lot of people make this argument, but I can't find a single instance of legal precedence to back it up.

    Impeachment hearings

That's true, but there's no way they'll get the 2/3 super majority they need in the Senate to remove him if they don't prove a crime was committed. Democrats are playing a dangerous game here. They'll increase the odds of Trump winning a second term if this is ultimately unsuccessful.

    Impeachment hearings

It seemed that 99% of what we heard today was hearsay, and it wouldn't be admissible in a court of law. Democrats tried to gloss over this fact by making the wild claim that hearsay can be much better evidence than direct evidence. It was an odd way to start the hearings.

Not a Culture War but a Patriotic Defense Against all Cults

https://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/hcs1317pp.pdf The total number of reported hate crimes has increased in 6 of the last 7 years. It increased by 20.5% in 2014 under Obama. But the total number of reported & unreported hate crimes has actually been lower under Trump than under Obama. It just...

Not a Culture War but a Patriotic Defense Against all Cults

In his subtitle he preaches against tribalism, then he commences to categorize the right as a cult and the left as patriots. It's funny how he can see tribalism & cult like followers on the other side of the aisle, but not on his own side.

BIG: SCOTUS allows suit against gun manufacturer to go forward

You're right. I didn't word that very well. I meant that gun manufacturers aren't covered by the PLCAA against lawsuits whenever they break marketing laws. That's one of the few exceptions the law provides. My guess is that the plaintiffs will have a hard time proving Remington used illegal...

BIG: SCOTUS allows suit against gun manufacturer to go forward

The PLCAA is in place for the specific purpose of keeping firearm manufacturers from being held liable for crimes committed with their products. It seems this lawsuit is unique though because they are claiming Remington broke state marketing laws, and that isn't covered by the PLCAA. We'll see...

    What would you do ?

Morality is a sliding scale that varies greatly from person to person. Very few things are black & white, most are different shades of gray. I wouldn't have a problem with this scenario from a moral standpoint. His tax issues are between him & the government. But I wouldn't want to take on the...

Prop 47 is California's Biggest Blunder

I'm not all that familiar with California's legislation, but I don't think Prop. 47 completely decriminalizes these acts. It just moves them from felony to misdemeanor. You can still be prosecuted for these crimes, but you're a lot less likely to end up incarcerated.

Prop 47 is California's Biggest Blunder

This is actually a fairly common trend across the country to reduce incarceration rates. Oklahoma voted in 2016 to raise the felony threshold for theft from $500 to $1000. I was very leery when it passed because I thought it would lead to higher theft rates, but our theft rates have actually...

Evidently, Right Wing politics can make you fat

Obesity rates are tied closely to poverty rates. States with higher levels of poverty tend to have higher levels of obesity, and states with lower levels of poverty tend to have lower levels of obesity. I doubt that it has much to do with political affiliation.

If you want to get rich, spend 1/10th your income on a car..and "3/16 of your income on your rent"

This reminds me of Jeff Bezos driving an Accord long after he became an billionaire. I'm not sure there's a one size fits all approach to how much you should spend on transportation or housing, but living within your means & avoiding unnecessary debt is always smart.

    Oklahoma, I love this State.

I'm actually very much in favor of this. As the article mentions, Oklahoma has the highest incarceration rates in the country, and the U.S. has the highest incarceration rates in the world. So our incarceration rates are essentially the highest in the world. We should've done this a long time...

    Oklahoma, I love this State.

The definition of "true democracy" can vary greatly from person to person or from country to country. If the majority of the Indian population want significant restrictions to freedom of speech, then that's a reflection of what true democracy means to them. I think to some extent we've found...

https://www.pacificcouncil.org/newsroom/do-indians-have-freedom-speech https://www.asiatimes.com/2019/06/article/free-speech-under-fire-in-india/ Not off hand. I was speaking theoretically. A quick google search shows that India is quite restrictive of free speech despite the fact that they are...
