    Charts not loading in TWS

Same for me OP: charts not populating. I've seen it before; not sure the cause. SOmetimes if i change the time frame from 1 day to 2 days or something i can coax it to populate, but seems pretty bad today. In fact, overall TWS super laggy/bloated today and connection dropping frequently too. Not...

    avoiding automatic liquidation by IB

Well please post once you hear back / get a resolution...since if that's really what happened -- the Algorithm auto-liquidated a long position that had the effect of worsening your margin deficit -- that would seem to seem to fly in the face of something pretty fundamental about what the...

Any real reasons left to go with a desktop / tower over a laptop? (Faster / more powerful perhaps?)

8GB RAM is overkill? (I've never built my own rig though I like to tinker so may look into it -- out of curiosity, where does one get the OS -- presumably W10 -- for a self-build?)

    avoiding automatic liquidation by IB

Right, but wouldn't the Algorithm -- peace and blessings be upon it -- at the very least verify that the position it's auto-liquidating would result in an INCREASE rather than a decrease to the account's excess liquidity? It wouldn't ever take an action that would increase the margin deficit...

    avoiding automatic liquidation by IB

I'm surprised at this too...in fact I must be missing something fundamental: wouldn't closing the long side increase your required margin (i.e. decrease your excess liquidity)? Isn't that the opposite of what should be happening? I've only been auto-liquidated twice, and each time involved...

Options Spreads Bids/Ask Spreads on IB Paper Trading Account

Yeah, OP what you're seeing has to do with the above combined with the fact that simulating Limit trades in a paper account for options with wide bid/ask spreads will be super inaccurate - I remember running into this issue too when I was trying to simulate my options strategy in a paper acct...

Any real reasons left to go with a desktop / tower over a laptop? (Faster / more powerful perhaps?)

Just checking out these NUC models...nice and tiny, but wouldn't the heat dissipation issue not be just as much of a drawback as it is with a laptop? The intel shared ITT suggests that a laptop with identical specs to a desktop will nonetheless have inferior performance because it will run...

Any real reasons left to go with a desktop / tower over a laptop? (Faster / more powerful perhaps?)

Sounds like we're not too dissimilar re: usage + observations. (Mine = mostly brokerage platform + several live charts + excel workbooks w/ lots of real-time formulas recalculating while streaming live quotes via API.) My prior rig was similar to yours (Asus laptop Core i7-6700HQ CPU, 16 GB...

Any real reasons left to go with a desktop / tower over a laptop? (Faster / more powerful perhaps?)

On the topic of laptop heat dissipation, btw, do the ~$25 USB-powered fan cooling pads (eg this one which i have) do much to preserve / protect lifespan? I always have my laptop sitting on one of those and when I lift it up to touch the bottom, it's always nice and cool which is reassuring...

Any real reasons left to go with a desktop / tower over a laptop? (Faster / more powerful perhaps?)

If it were just battery life, I probably wouldn't care, since 95% of my usage is at home & plugged in (which is what got me to wondering whether i should be looking at desktops in the first place since portability wasn't all that important...) But sounds like you're both saying that there would...

Any real reasons left to go with a desktop / tower over a laptop? (Faster / more powerful perhaps?)

Trading, backtesting, running calcs in Excel. Yes, I figured expandability would be one of the prime considerations where I'm limited w/ a laptop. E.g. i use a high-end gaming laptop w/ 32GB DDR ram, but I suppose I wasn't sure whether the boost to 64GB-or-beyond (not possible in my machine)...

Any real reasons left to go with a desktop / tower over a laptop? (Faster / more powerful perhaps?)

Just like the title asks, I want to know if there's any persuasive reason to still be considering a desktop (aka tower) PC in 2020. There was a time when laptops provided portability but at the expense of performance, but that gap seems to be closing if not gone(?) I'm seeing more or less the...

PSA: do NOT upgrade to latest TWS version (979.3e) > critical bugs.

It's now been two full weeks since the 978 "Latest" build imploded and broke legacy DDE order submission. @dst, you seem to pop into some threads earnestly promising you'll get to the bottom of various things...I can't really imagine there'd be much of higher priority than this. Hey, don't do it...

Looking for EOD option data for entire option chains (with daily CSV download)

Yep, I found the $600 w/o Calcs option too; seems to be everything i need at the lowest price point. I have very rudimentary programming chops (aka can't code but can usually hack something together with some help) -- is that line of code you give something I drop into a batch file and run as a...

Looking for EOD option data for entire option chains (with daily CSV download)

Thanks, i'd looked at CBOE but didn't realize they had monthly/annual subscription options which brings it down into the affordability range; had previously thought the only option was to buy daily downloads x 365 (or # of trading days or what-not)

Looking for EOD option data for entire option chains (with daily CSV download)

FWIW it wasn't just the file size (which was actually 150MB, which I know still isn't all that onerous all things considered), but also the cost -- the package was priced for professionals ($500+ / month IIRC) who I suppose wanted a total-market snapshot. I can continue to use my DIY solution...

Looking for EOD option data for entire option chains (with daily CSV download)

I have a list of ~400 underlyings for which I want to download a daily CSV with all of the prior day's closing prices for the entire option chain (all strikes, expiries). Want to replace my own DIY solution and willing to pay a nominal subscription fee. - Must include closing bids / asks - Must...

TWS software update -- all fonts too big now. Anyone else?

My STABLE version OK (order submission is, at least) -- still broken on "LATEST" build, confirmed by chat reps. No ETA on when they'll push a fix to LATEST; they say it's patched in BETA build but i haven't tested it and probably wont.

Can you elaborate on what performance issues you were noticing?

PSA: do NOT upgrade to latest TWS version (979.3e) > critical bugs.

Update(?): TWS "Latest" auto-installed a version numbered v978.1j this morning...that sounds like a roll back of the 979.3e "Latest" version that sent everything haywire...(not sure the exact version # of "Latest" that existed prior to 979.3e). The huge-font issue seems to be gone...however...
