I believe IB posts all P/L in the base currency - so in this case, JPY (e.g. if you were to place a EURUSD trade, your P/L will show in USD).

$5 a side is a tough nut to crack - IB is only $2.50 per side (minimum) on IDEALPRO. So this works out to usually add about a pip to the spread.

I've never dealt with MB, but is $5.00 a RT commission or one side? IB has fair commissions (on IDEALPRO) and the spreads are good.

Right - you'll just have another screen open on your desktop. The price is fair and I've been using it for many years as an alternative to carrying around a laptop.

Right - they allow you to customize the calendar for time zone and pairs (you might have to sign in - I don't know).

Right - some news releases have a larger impact (e.g. NFP) on a currency than others (e.g. Trade balance). Some people get off on trading news events - I think more for the thrill of it. Forex Factory has a very nice and simple to use calendar... http://www.forexfactory.com/calendar.php

I'm not familiar with the Oanda interface, so I can't comment about it - other than you must be comfortable with whichever platform you settle on. EURUSD, USDJPY, etc are great to start with - you'll typically find good movement in any of the majors during late London and early NY sessions...
