The 7 Deadly Sins of Trading

How could the 7 choices not capture a substantial chunk of the vote? There was no 8th choice. Saddam Hussein won 100% of the Iraqi vote too -- he was the only choice on the ballot! My "technical glitches" choice wasn't an option. I had to vote for "chasing", which is what I end up doing...

The 7 Deadly Sins of Trading

Just stating what causes me the most harm. When there is one of these glitches, by the time I get out of my trade or get into the one I intended, the market has more often than not, gone to a worse price. I'm a 100% systematic trader. While the losses are totally painful and gutwrenching, I...

    E-mini questions

If everybody put in limit orders away from the market, there wouldn't be any trades executed, right? And a limit order past the market is, practically, the same thing as a market order, right? I'd say the answer to your question is pretty close to 50/50. Half of the people are putting in...

The 7 Deadly Sins of Trading

What causes me the most harm is technical glitches. Things like: the power going out, my DSL going out, the exchange having technical difficulties, the broker having technical difficulties (the most common problem!), my alarm not waking me up for the opening properly, and computer malfunction.

    Eurex website down?

Thanks, Def. What the heck can I be doing wrong? I can access every other website -- including Elite Trader. But any of my bookmarks to Eurex stopped working yesterday. I'm dumbfounded.

    Eurex website down?

Is it just me or has the Eurex website (www.eurexchange.com) really been down for almost 24 hours now? Anyone know what happened?

    40yo's new career or bust

Sometimes you have to take a big risk when the situation warrants it. You can't cross a chasm in two small leaps. (taken from the quote page at the back of Forbes. I don't recall the author.)

    Daytraders Bulletin

For backtesting on a shoestring budget... Get your technical indicators from books. Use your library and its interlibrary loan capabilities. For backtesting software you don't need tradestation. Check out wealth-lab.com. Use Excel if you have it. Write your own testing software in...

    What License for Futures

If you are just trading your own or your firms money there is no need to be a registered CTA. In whose eyes would you be improving your credibility? The prop firm owner's? You don't have any clients to impress. To register as a CTA takes $1100 per year CFTC and NFA membership dues and the...

    Question about stupid, stupid Excel

Or easier to remember than Minime's perfectly good solution... Use the ISNUMBER function. IF (ISNUMBER(E50),E50,"") Use the double quotes right next to each other to have a completely blank cell that won't be plotted.

    Average Annual Return...

Thanks, DT-waw and Praetorian2. Yeah, I'll second that -- more clients and a consistent 80% per year. :) We trade NQ, FDAX, and ZN (that's Nasdaq, Dax, and t-note futures). 100% systematic. Please don't ask me anything more about our strategies. While there was only $345k in the...

    Average Annual Return...

It all depends on the volatility. 10% per year, year in and year out with no volatility is awesome. But if you occasionally have a 30% drawdown, +60% per year, on average, would be a lot better. Go to www.autumngold.com and look at, for example, the 12 month rankings to see hedge fund...

    Comparing NQ/qqq

With the NQ's you get 60% long term, 40% short term capital gains and with the QQQ's you get 100% short term. With NQ's you get to keep roughly 5% more of your profits after taxes. This probably outweighs any transaction cost differences between these two very liquid markets.

    How does a champion think?

Interesting post. Thank you. I've found that profitable trading is like bricklaying... You figure out what works and do it over and over and over again ad nauseum. D'nish in the movie Rounders (the guy with the kids and mortgage) made a living grinding out small pots -- not taking big...
