    Trading in mainland China

Chinese stock markets are not different from other developing markets, in that it is very inefficient, and is not different from the US market in 1800s. In any case, if you are willing to take both sides, long and short, I think the opportunity is there.

    Trading in mainland China

It was also my impression that the securities industry in China is not much developed when I visited China in Feb. But this in itself may present an opportunity as the market is very inefficient in China.

    YUAN Revaluation = Bullish!!

The us inflation will rise, many chinese sweet shops will be bankrupt (they now survive on 3-5% profit margin). But I guess we have to wait a year to see the full impact.

    Chop vs. Trend

I tested this indicator and have strong doubts about its usefulness. Using the indicator on sp500 and nasdaq, it shows that sp500 is more trending than nasdaq. Anyone else has similar conclusion?

    trend following delusion shattered

I tested some stock indices, like the sp500, nasdaq, iwm, using either long term moving average (long term >= 200 days ) or 20-day averages for over 10 years. The Sharpe ratios are good (about 1.00 to 1.30) for some indices except the sp500. There is nothing fancy, and the results are well...

    trend following delusion shattered

Actually, I did back test. There are big drawn downs with moving averages (more than 30%) , but they out-perform the buy-and-hold for certain stock indices. Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

    trend following delusion shattered

Yes, totally agreed. It would be know which trend method works and which doesn't. Since no one will disclose the ones that work, maybe we should look at those which does not work, just to get a lesson. Zweig's method certainly worked for a long time in 80's. Why it stopped working in 90's...

    trend following delusion shattered

Recently I read Zweig's " Winning on wall Street". Basically it's a an approach based on trend, and it discusses everything from momenutum, volume to put-call ratio, investment sentiment. But when I looked at his track records (Zweig Fund, symbol: ZF, for example), I was dismayed. Seems it has...

Are there any Jim Rogers' fans here?

I don't know much about his incorrect calls, but he was bearish about the stock market in the 90's. But he said he won't long/short a position unless it is insanely low/high, so even if he is incorrect, he won't loss much. In this aspect, he is very much like Buffet. For all my...

Are there any Jim Rogers' fans here?

Some of his records: predicated the 87 stock market crash. predicated the collapse of Japanese stock market in late 80's. picked the commodities bottom in 98. called the bond market top in June 2003. Having been calling for a weak US dollar in the recent years. This guy is...

    housing crash

yes, the rates are low. But even at the current low rates, the mortgages + condo fee is still at least $2300 /month, which cannot be covered by rents, as the rents on 2 bed/2 bath is only 1200-1600 /month in some of the nicest area. I know someone who bought a condo. He said he had to wait...

    housing crash

Recently in Maryland, near DC, an apartment was converted into condo. 2 bed/2 bath are selling for 400k, with condo fees about 500/month. Many people are buying them for investment. How do they cover the mortgages? I am just puzzled.

Steve, where do you live? I am asking because I think the location is the most important part of the topic under discussion.
