    Goin' off the rails...

Bung, This is almost a mirror image of last Dec/Jan. QQQ looked best on the charts, hope springs eternal or is it save a tree, eat a beaver? I forget, anyhow HLTH, SINA, SOHU all hitting new highs, give me a break. Yet SPY, DIA, IWM, MDY, UTH, ICF, PPH, EFA are all down on the day. It...

Have you collected your $20 yet?

Screw the Music industry, the Government should look at the pharmaceutical Companies. I just stopped by Target to pick up some Claritin now that it is available over the counter. When I used to get my prescription filled it was about $250 for 100 tablets of the 24 hour. Now that it is over...

First smart thing I heard on CNBC this year

Last I checked it was about $50 a year, little too rich for my blood. I usually just snoop through when Im at Borders.

First smart thing I heard on CNBC this year

I think it was Active Trader that had an article on the Dogs this month or last. It seems I remember the return was (-18%) for the past year. However, MO had a good run from 18 to 50 in 2000-2001 and I think EK ran from 25 to 35 over the past year. (If it was not AT, it was one of the other...

Odd-Lot Short Sales on the rise

Chas, How do you interpret the OLSS ratio vs. the VIX? I find it curious that the VIX is low (relatively) and the OLSS ratio has broken Sept highs. Also of note is the AD line has not been too bad. Depending what you were long you could have been ok. So the level of short selling is...

First smart thing I heard on CNBC this year

A statistic that is often thrown out is that 1/2 of the market's total return has come from the payment of dividends. Of course the 90s were an anomaly where cap gains ruled the roost. I suspect over the next few years stocks that pay dividends will outperform non-dividend payers. You can...

Einstein's puzzle: Can you sovle it?

Axeman, I am confused by the question and or the answer that your boss was looking for. But, what do language scores have to do with IQ score? Further, doesn't ones analytical and problem solving skills make up a large part of IQ?

Einstein's puzzle: Can you sovle it?

Plumlazy, That is about where I was, I worked through it once but wasn't too sure about some of my placement. So I reworked it to see if I came up with the same things. Your Menza T-Shirt will be arriving soon.:)

Einstein's puzzle: Can you sovle it?

I came up with the German as having the fish. Would be interested in seeing how you broke things down. I came up with: Norweigian/Dunhill/Yellow/Water/Cats Dane/Blends/Blue/Tea/Horses English/Pall-Mall/Red/Milk/Birds German/Prince/Green/Coffee--- Fish...

Odd-Lot Short Sales on the rise

Chas, I don't think $750 is of any significance, although I don't have any long term gold charts. I just remember it got up around $800 or so, way back when. What is interesting though, is the exhaustion runs that often take place in gold stocks around trouble periods. Pull up ASA on a...

    Trading Books

SW, I would agree. I read this and Murphys "Intermarket Technical Analysis." Of the two, I preferred the Visual investor and found it a lot more practical. And as a TA book in general it stands out for longer term traders.

Here are just a few general things from my CPA study guide. I would also agree that this stuff should be set up with a good Attorney, or those preprinted forms you can buy at Staples.:D 1995-1996 Gleim CPA Review, Business Law. Partnership law is codified in the Uniform Partnership Act...

Odd-Lot Short Sales on the rise

Chas, You're right, probably a more accurate comparison would be the QCHA vs the NYSE Composite. What I have noticed on some indicators which is curious, is that although we did not take out the August highs on the indexes (sans naz), more individual stocks made new highs than in August...

    Ebay??

Traden4alpha, That was a good post, the bottom line is EBAY will trade for whatever people are going to pay. The problem that I see in this market is that those bad experiences can happen overnight. For instance, GNSS and NVDA were crowd favorites in 01. And one morning people woke up 50%...

    Ebay??

Corso, I am with you, I have known a few people who have been burned with little stuff. I am also leery to mail strangers checks since there is always the risk of them helping themselves to a little extra. Not too hard with a good scanner and printer, but I digress. This was great...

    care to comment anybody?

Here are several scenarios that I came up with. Now I just manage my own money and do not take in clients. So my liability, as with anyone else would result from an accident or something like that either in my car or from someone who is visiting. The apartment/auto/umbrella protect me from...

    Ebay??

But I totally forgot about the used car business... [/B] I ran in to a guy on a trip home who had a really sharp Mercedes, maybe 74 that he said he bought on EBAY. Makes a lot of sense for people who are looking for something or have something like that rather than going to Carmax.

    Ebay??

Bung, This is one of the sections of the market were I have to ask myself what the hell are people thinking. After an 80% drop in the nasdaq and similar falls in real business that people would not be happy to just take money off the table and put it in their pockets is a mystery. I think...

    care to comment anybody?

Vlad, A good or similar example of this could be found in the Enron case as it related at the time to current and past partners of Arthur Andersen LLP. At the time there were several articles I glanced at in probably the WSJ about partners consulting with bankruptcy attorneys in an effort to...
