If you're trading capital with which you are expected to do just that, you're wrong. No one (with a brain) has their retirement account with VN or anyone like him. He's SUPPOSED to take risk.

lol (I'll preface this by saying that I've traded options full time for going on fifteen years now, for myself, banks, funds, and prop shops. Several exchange memberships and the attendant floor experience, futs, fx, equities, indices, blah blah.) You and/or Atticus might be smart...

I only skimmed it, but they're probably quoted in that Bloomberg article earlier in the thread. Atticus, as far as "otherwise", he also bankrolls several traders with his own cash, and that's had to have come from somewhere. Besides, even if the growth isn't organic (of course it's not), he...

Don't talk about things you don't know about. Of course the SP positions hit him hard, but there was a lawsuit involved afterwards--he lost more money than he "should" have, let's say. Anyway, the blowout was the result of his Thai positions, where liquidity basically went to 0. He...

easy money - lots of arbitrage opportunities out there (so easy a caveman can do it)

A 10ms advantage is enough to make a SHITTON of money. IB is great for the small retail trader, even for scalping. But it's not in the major leagues of tools, by a long shot.

Vic is 1) very smart and 2) very hubristic and idealistic. Figure out which parts fall into which category (he's very open with his thoughts; it's not difficult), and you can make a LOT of money.

Anyone worked for a firm in SF?

I'm thinking about moving out there, and wouldn't mind getting a regular gig for a couple years at first. But is there like a culture of people who go to work at all hours or something? I mean, Europe would be something like 12:00a - 7:00a, and if you traded Asia you could never go out to eat...

    The Bond Review

I'm not a fixed income trader, so maybe this is naive, but why does high short interest mean there are a lot of short bets? Why can't they just be long corporates, short CDS, etc. against? (If my suggestion is true, your short squeeze argument is probably MORE correct.)

Optionable OPBL - 56% depreciation in just 3 days

No. This combined with "I've never seen a stock go from 1 to 9 and back again"... Noob much? Nothing wrong with starting out, nothing wrong with posting opinions and looking for feedback, nothing wrong with posting your thoughts. But don't act like you know things or have expertise you...

He blew up once, the well-publicized 1997 event. In 2001 he started trading customer capital again. 9/11 hurt him badly, just like it did anyone long equities. But as far as I know, he made it through. Neither he nor Taleb have made many hundreds of millions. As well as I am able to know...

This is garbage. All that crap from the New Yorker article has been completely taken out of context, and that's why Taleb doesn't like to talk about Vic.

How do you know? Do you have money in his fund? It's easy for me to back up my position -- years and years of stellar returns and one blow up. Back yours up.

Wtf are you talking about? A trader's trader? The guy is a windbag now. Markets "bore" him, and he gets pissed when people talk to him about them. He's very smart and very interesting, but he's decided he's a philosopher. Niederhoffer has achieved organic growth like maybe no one in...

Niederhoffer = 0 to nine figures TWICE, including a very public and humiliating blowup, and much-less-publicized recovery. Taleb = wrote a couple good (not great) books.

Yeah. Buy options and wait. If you blow out, just be really smug about it because it's everyone else who's wrong.

    QuickFix anyone possible OMS?

Since you're going with Java (and for your purposes I agree with the choice), look into the Eclipse RCP framework. Trailhead: http://eclipsetrader.sourceforge.net
