    Intelligent design and extinctions

An intelligent software engineer rewrites his codes. A dump software engineer also rewrites his codes. You can't observe the behavior (rewriting codes) and determine if he is intelligent. An unintelligent species can behave exactly the same as an intelligent being. A spider need food to...

    Intelligent design and extinctions

There are many reasons. For example, project schedule, market timing etc. We all have limitations. Because we are intelligent, we know how to work around under our constraints.

    Intelligent design and extinctions

It seems that we have different definition of "intelligence". "Intelligent" is not the same as "perfect". Being intelligent doesn't mean that one can't make mistakes. You guys are intelligent, but you all have made mistakes in your life. Have you done anything that you regret now? Ask...

    Intelligent design and extinctions

    1. I didn't say God. I offered one possible explanation for an intelligent design process. 2. As a software engineer, I don't think I am learning even when I have to re-write most of my codes. 3. It is possible that some of us will ultimately be exterminated. Why isn't it possible?

    Intelligent design and extinctions

I am trying to offer an explanation (not a proof) here. Design is a process and it might be an iterative process. A mass extinction might be part of the process to create a better product (in this case a better creature). Consider software design. Sometimes you need to delete most of the...

    Portfolio margin

I understood that. Any movement of the underlying will change the cash account, and it will affect the interest charge. You mentioned short position is MTM. Is it true that pm is MTM? IOW both long and short positions are MTM.

    Portfolio margin

------------------------------------------------ Thanks. Let me see if I can construct a portfolio to long QQQQ without paying interest here with higher leverage. Suppose I short $600K of QID. Cash account = 100K (initial cash) + 600K (short proceeds) - 600K (short positions). So I...

6:1 margin for overnight stock positions at InteractiveBrokers

Why would you think they are same as Reg-T? I will expect to pay a lower interest with pm when compared to reg-T.

6:1 margin for overnight stock positions at InteractiveBrokers

Suppose initially I have $100K, and my account is enabled for pm. I then buy $200K value of diversified stocks, and short sell $200K value of another set of diversified stocks. How will ib charge me interest?

    Portfolio margin

Portfolio margin is not supposed to give higher leverage to daytraders. If your brokerage firm finds out the daytrading patterns in your account, day trading rules (i.e. 4x) will apply instead. If they don't apply daytrading rule to your account, you should get 6x intraday. pm is new. It...

    Portfolio margin

Did you apply for pm for your account? If not, you are not trading under pm, and they will charge you interest too. I know IB offers pm, but I don't know if MBTrading and Genesis will offer pm. [edit] I am not an expert in pm. I just offer information that I know (or I believe). You...

    Portfolio margin

Every brokerage firm can implement pm the way they want it. I don't think their clearing firms will charge them the interest cost, but they might charge you to increase their profit. There are no rules regarding how the brokerage firms implement pm. Call your brokerage firm to confirm...

Margining for shorting call options: IB or Thinkorswim (Penson)

Why double? It should cause a decrease of the same amount. I never checked the value though.

Margining for shorting call options: IB or Thinkorswim (Penson)

You should look at SMA. If SMA > initial margin, you have sufficient capital to open the position. When SMA < 0, you will get a margin call. But IB doesn't have a margin call. Instead, they will liquidate your position to fulfill the margin requirement.

Margining for shorting call options: IB or Thinkorswim (Penson)

The buying power effect is the additional capital required in your account to open the position. That means, your SMA will be reduced by the same amount. If you have no other postions, buying power effect is the required margin for that single position.

Do I qualify for Trader status?

Exactly. It is better not to elect trader status if you make money trading 1256 contracts.
