VIX ETFs performance on 8/25 (XIV, SVXY, VXX, ETC)

Exactly. VIX products are extremely popular now and if you look at the liquidity in some of these markets (VXX especially) its clear that they dont operate via 'randomness': no one would invest in something that was not derived from any set of mathematical principles. I too have been trading...

No clue what OP is talking about because if you check the historical data, futures were actually bid up on the 25th, albeit slightly......

Thoughts on long OTM SPY calls

Eh....the VIX is pretty low at this point, so I dont think you're going to get crushed as much as you might think. Sure if the market pops another 10-15% by new years, you're going to have the VIX a touch lower, but its not going to be cataclysmic for your vol considerations. If you're buying...

Advice on exploiting low volatility - UAL

If you decided to play a spread, make sure you're buying your options ATM and selling the ones OTM....that way you're long the options that will jump the most should vol pop (ATM options will be more sensitive to vol than those OTM)

    beginner question in options

Also, the liquidity of the option plays an important role in where you're going to get filled. Always try to stick to options that are traded enough so you can get in and out at a reasonable price. If the bid/ask spread is outrageous, you probably want to stay away from that product because you...

" Unusual " Options activity ... Where to Look to fing it ?

People do it for the VIX all the time. Its quite funny to be honest. Someone bought millions of dollars of VIX calls @ 25! The markets going to crash!

    Backtesting and Curve fitting

I view it as part of the scientific method: You start with an underlying ideology or understanding of the market and your strategy or system is a manifestation of that ideology. You can use a backtest as one way to test the validity of your system (ie test your hypothesis) but changing the core...

    Backtesting and Curve fitting

Curve fitting may make your backtest show better results but it tells you very little about what the future might bring and you may end up sacrificing a more logically and technically sound strategy for one that merely 'fits' better.

Heads up - AAPL earnings are tomorrow, Tuesday October 27.

In more polite terms: While people may respect your posts and calls, it is difficult to ascertain what exactly you are doing unless you post some hard #s. Obviously no one expects a live feed on your positions, but a simple 'hey I bought the x strikes for x amount at x expiration' would be...

Heads up - AAPL earnings are tomorrow, Tuesday October 27.

But you can manage it. Im not arguing you might not make money simply buying calls or puts, but it leaves you open to perhaps more risk than is needed. How profitable has your strategy of playing option earnings moves been? Because in order to justify the risk that you undertake, they ought to...

They have expiration dates and hoping that the market is going to hit your expectations consistently is not a winning strategy IMO.
