Risk control. Well that's nice to know. I know a couple managers and they both toe the conventional line. Not saying thy are smart just taken the training that all portfolio managers take. We have lots of discussions and they are pretty set in their ways. One claims that he has to because of...

With a momentum strategy I don't want to benefit from diversification. Or do I? The objective of diversification is to mitigate volatility. Some stocks go up and some go down. I want the stocks I buy to go up. If they don't I get rid of them. There seems to be a feeling among portfolio...

That could be a problem for a momentum strategy. By the time they get their position filled the move is over. Us little guys have the odd advantage.

With a momentum portfolio don't I want a positive covariance? Isn't my optimal risk control to be out of stocks when the momentum stops? Don't even need simple Pythagoras. :)

Speculator! not trader I refer to myself as a Speculator. Is there not some regulatory body that says whether or not you can manage other peoples money? Or can you just set up a web site and call yourself a hedge fund? We have to define simple. :) This stuff is too far over my head. The...

@longandshort If you have time check out this YouTube interview with a hedge fund manager. How to Manage Risk Like a Hedge Fund Manager | Interview with Ryan Worch - YouTube I checked out the fund performance and he doesn't beat every year, but he doesn't lose much. I'm not sure how his...

Then his performance in the championship this year is just luck? As for entry points I believe he look for breakouts from a base but also will enter a trade in the base if the stock moves on volume. His position size also challenges conventional wisdom as he is not well diversified.

Are you agreeing that with a momentum strategy I can trade with nothing more than the information I get off the charts? Simple strategy, buy stocks that are showing price increases on volume and exit when they stop increasing. Priority number 1 is to protect capital. No holding on to losers...

Why not? Isn't the objective of trading to make money? Mind you Seykota says you get what you want out of the market so maybe you are happy losing for what ever reason.

I suppose in a way I'm adjusting my rules depending on my interpretation of the chart. I'm not exiting on a fixed percentage but rather on a break of a trendline or a moving average. I might also take off part of a position if price goes parabolic. OK I can't argue with that. If my strategy is...

I believe it does. Well kind of; but if I'm rebalancing every x period using price performance am I not using TA? Especially if I get my information off a price chart? I'm basing my selection process in price performance. I'm not adding any additional signals mainly because I don't have access...

Yet it seem to beat buy and hold. I know it's a sample of one and it's anecdotal evidence, but I check at year end the stocks I sold. I take the price and position size I sold at and compare it to the year end price. In most cases I was better off to have sold, and in the few cases where I...

I think the difference between technical traders and fundamental traders, at least between myself and L&S is that the fundamentalist wants to know why the price is advancing. The technician only cares that it is advancing. The institutions move the price. They have resources the retail trader...

Now Longandshort and I don't agree on much but 15 unprofitable years is a long time to follow a teacher and not see much progress. Maybe, just maybe you could learn something from him. (L&S) A lot of new traders would be screaming scam if they paid for a course and weren't immediately...
