    Basic income

Labour is a saleable resource. What kind of economist would think people with 40 hours to sell would only sell 15 of them. What kind of employer would buy 15 hours a week at the price for 40?

"Easier" to make money going Long than Short?

Sure, there is a long bias in the market, but its incredibly hard to convince traders to be long in a long-term bull market. So while there's a long bias in the market, there's a short bias in retail traders. They keep going short until they've gone broke.

    Good Black Swans

Hi Steve - Yes, these are from daily charts, I only use daily EMA's - 20, 50 and 200. In any market I was long in, if price + 20EMA closed below the 50EMA I would exit immediately. That includes any individual equities. But if I was long in equities, and this pattern showed in that day's...

Thanks for that Neo, spot on.

    socialism in America.

An unintentionally illuminating and helpful post. Members of a capitalist society generally have the free choice to change their own political system, and this can include incorporating a little socialism, some socialism or a lot of socialism. Such a freedom is implicit in the capitalist model...

What metrics do you use to measure trading success?

I'm most interested in profit/loss per quarter or per year, plus % capital growth. I do mentally note if I am getting a string of losers in a month (though I couldn't ever tell you my rolling win rate) and re-examine the set-ups and entry/exit patterns used. But when you're long-term trading, a...

    Stop Loss Talk

I don't look at this, but I am a long-term trader. The initial stop has to be where the TA says it will be: i.e. at the cross-over point beyond which further price movement in my direction is now less likely than further movement in the opposite direction. Any other position is effectively...

    Stop Loss Talk

On my long-term trend-following trades, I have a set stop-loss which is put in place as soon as the position is opened. But I also continue to TA the position as time goes by, so that if the trend weakens significantly, I'll get out manually anyway. The basic rule for the fixed stop is that...

    Hedging long in a recession?

Cash is the most dependable hedge. But I would recommend the 100% rule - either 100% long when stocks are moving upwards, or 100% in cash when they're not. (Like a lot of us, I also own my own property which is inherently a hedge against stock market volatility, though that's not why I bought it.)

Vote here if you think this is the beginning of a bear market of 2018?

No evidence = no analysis. No analysis = no conclusion. So I had to vote "Not sure".

    socialism in America.

Europe is not socialist and all the states in this continent and Scandinavia became rich enough to adopt some semi-socialist policies through capitalism.

    socialism in America.

Poverty is a problem in all countries: relative poverty is nit, its just BS. As for starvation in the capitalist west, who are you kidding? Obesity seems to be killing more people than starving to death. However, to deal with poverty it is not necessary to destroy the capitalist society, it is...

    socialism in America.

I'm not sure I agree with your distinctions between current and historical socialist and communist states. I definitely suggest that living under one is pretty much just as wretched as living under the other. Anyway, socialism is just a pre-cursor of communism, there is little practical hope of...

What is your analysis of PTJ's prediction of the 1987 crash?

Well said. The fail-safe signal printed on Mondat 12th October when price and the 20EMA on the Dow closed below the 50EMA. Same signal appeared on the S&P on the 13th. But there were abundant TA warning signals before then.

    socialism in America.

Capitalism at least leaves open the opportunity for each person to pursue their own interests: these might or might not be financial wealth, but at least if they become wealthy they also have the opportunity to spend / share / donate their wealth with others, spending being a form of sharing...

    are trend lines self-fulfilling prophesies?

Like all lines found on charts, trendlines are a better guide to what the trader should do than what the market will do.

Calls for international boycott of the World Cup

Brutal dictatorship sounds exactly right. I guess you haven't been badly treated in Russia as you're not a political opponent, nor a competing businessman, nor an investigative journalist, nor LGBTI, nor a female subject to domestic abuse, nor a Jehovah's Witness, nor Chechen, nor Syrian, nor...
