You know what gives you viruses???

Virus's frequently attempt to switch off or negate major virus detectors and firewalls to increase their lifespan and to make it possible to pass information from your pc.

If you check the detailed descriptions of any virus you get you will find a description of its actions on other programs. Uninstall, clean, and replace these programs and life should return quickly to normal.

Although its not unreasonable on a low spec machine to turn off your virus detection while (only) trading its stupid to turn off virus detection when browsing/mailing or to turn off firewalls at any time (not implying that wallace is silly to replace a product if he prefers another).

This would not be easy to do. There are many independent computer security companies and security consultants that, on an ongoing basis, analyze and reverse-engineer AV software updates, Microsoft security patches, etc.

For example, if a new AV update is issued part of the analysis these gurys perform would be to determined how effective it is at combatting a targetted threat. Another part would be to determine if potential security holes are opened up as a result oft these updates.

This work is typically financed (directly or otherwise) by industry groups that depend on these software components for mission critical applications. The analysis goes deep down into machine code level within the OS kernel. Some of the results are published in publications or sites that deal with computer security.

It would be close to impossible for a reputable AV company to get away with intentionally injecting viruses. Of course, if you install software that claims to be AV software from an unknown company ...
