What's up with TRIN today....

I usually follow trin pretty close and it's been a great indicator of market direction lately. today however, it was extremely choppy and didn't move up past 1.2 until after 3 est despite widespread downward pressure.

Can anybody explain the anomaly to me in terms of underlying buying and selling that was going on??

TRIN ended the day at about 1 yesterday (Wednesday), and was below 1 for most of the afternoon. I do not see how this is possible:

On the NYSE, there were 405 gainers yesterday and 2231 losers. The top 10 trading volume listed stocks were all down yesterday. I cannot believe that 5 times as much money flowed into the gainers as flowed into the losers.

Doesn't anybody understand???
 
The TRIN is defined as

(AI/DI) / (AV/DV) where

AI = Advancing Issues, DI = Declining Issues, AV=Advancing Volume etc.

The numbers for the Nyse for the 10/9 are:

AI = 478, DI = 2794, AV = 305767900; DV = 1842629700.

So TRIN = (478/2794)/(305767900/1842629700) = 0.17108/0.16594 = 1.03

So that looks about right.

Dow you use a calculator and just figure it out each time?

Can I set it up in ESignal?

Can I view it on a chart and access it as a symbol?

No, yes and yes. It depends upon what you subscribed to with eSignal. TRIN (and Tick) should be part of the indices available in eSignal.
