Because it's just ridiculous how stupid people really are. Not just in the US. Are some people angry? Yes. Are they feeling left behind? Yes. Look at this Achilles guy. Sheer anger and hatred. But under his pretentious tough outer layer hides a hurt soul, hurt perhaps by having fallen economically behind others. Left out. I get it.

But that they trust and believe a career liar and con man is just sheer stupidity. Same in France, the UK, or the Netherlands.

I think @nitro started a thread that sums it all up. It is people who have nothing to lose and are just envious there are others who do better. As long as a populist comes along who promises to upend the status quo they will vote for such. It really is that simple an explanation. It's envy and not wanting to accept failure on one's own part.
