What the heck? I pretty routinely, if I want to sell something, put in a big limit buy order a bit below the bid to make sure it doesn't fill but make it look like there is interest there. Then as soon as my sell goes through I cancel the buy. What were these guys doing that was different?

NOT much, but several things differ; they would never broadcast what you just did.
IF my turtle goes wild, inside city limits, no problem; if a rougue elephant goes mad/ they're calling the cops with a riot gun + they should.
A whole herd of wild elephants will get the cops attention much quicker+ quicker.

I get called out by Amp doing that with few contracts hundreds of times a minute when my algo had error.
