Not easily. Think the MTA has done studies on such, maybe as far back as the 80's, 90's last time there was a rash of incidents. Some railsystems have them but they were designed from the start.

But NY's subway is multi train car sizes, lengths and platforms. Think the cost would be in the dozens of millions if not $100+ mill.

There are markers on station walls (inside) and on poles (outside) telling Motorman where to stop based on length of his train. A Train, that I took back in the day, from my house was 2nd stop from the origin so I stood at the window of first car the whole way into downtown Manhattan, watched it all.

when i commuted, i would know where the door would be to within a foot or so. but with plexiglass and fixed platform doors, it would have to be much more precise.

This may or may not be a trivial controls solution (more precise stopping) if barriers are needed....or required as you point out by the stats.

You could just have telescoping barriers in the ballpark of the cart entries too like elevator doors.
