Way back it used to be fractional. 1/4 then 1/8 then came computers and the decimal place. Old tricks might still work with extremely large orders.

BTW in FX land it is down to 0.0001 +/: , now that is something. Sounds to me like someone want to capitalize on more trades. It is just a revenue issue.

The quants always say the lit exchanges are the most expensive place to trade.

Maybe this is part of an effort to reduce costs vis-à-vis dark pool economics.
