%%I don't exceed certain position sizing rules I've come across in the literature but I haven't settled upon a mathematical way to determine the exact amount. I need to change that. But back to my present purpose, would anyone recommend a trading code writer suitable to my needs? I understand they may be expensive.
My system for the past year is unusual and complicated. It is a big spreadsheet with columns deriving from various aspects of the equity price histories, arbitrary weights as to the importance of those columns, and quantified entry/exit “instructions”. I make decisions manually by reading from the spreadsheet and inserting judgment. I now want to automate in order to back-test and optimize, but doing so is beyond me. For one thing, two of the columns measure constructs which I draw on the price charts based on visual observation. They can probably be reduced to algorithm but I don’t know how. Also, my position sizing is by feel and I don’t know how to automate that. Should I hire someone?
%%You can neither automate nor back test a "system" unless you can define it objectively. In your description, you use words like "arbitrary," "judgment," and "sizing is by feel." An algorithm doesn't have feelings; it can't make arbitrary trades; and it has no judgment. You must be able to define every action your system takes based on data.
%%Steve- a good backtesting platform should include position sizing parameters. They are not mutually exclusive. Here is a link to the system I use...different ways to backtest..
