i need help to install more ram for my laptop

How much RAM should be necessary for a trading computer? I'm currently at 16 GB DDR4 24000 Mhz. I've been looking into updating this, but curious if I need it at all. I do some operations in Excel/SQL which tends to be computer intensive, but my memory usage is never maxed out and seems to peak around 50%.

I was told that perhaps upgrading my hard drive is better.

On the other hand, I'm buying a new rig in a while anyway, so might not bother upgrading until that.

Curious about this anyhow...

Replace HDD with SSD. For 80 euro you have a 500GB Samsung 860 Evo.
Watch the difference between HDD and SSD:

Thank you, schweiz. :)

I already have an SSD, actually. But some 'techies' I talked to suggested that since it's 2 years old now, it can be worthwhile upgrading to a newer and better SSD.

So, I'm considering that.

Samsung 970 is the fastest SSD. But you need an M2 slot. I did not take that one because it generates too much heat for my laptop. Reading at 3.5 GB.

So you never use all RAM 100%? And you don't have the impression that your software is slow or sluggish? In that case is your current RAM size more than sufficient.

Maximum seems to be 60% in task manager. Baseline around 50 % running all my stuff.

It's particularly when I'm loading data from my database into SQL that I can get issues, but it might be software limitations (code) rather than my system not being good enough. So it's quite possible that RAM or even a new SSD won't help my 'problems'.

They way you write it it seems indeed a code issue. If your RAM was too small you would notice it while reading in that large SQL database. Same if the speed of the SSD was low. However, if your code is slow in processing the data from SQL then it cannot be solved by RAM size or SSD speed.

I suspect you're right.

Appreciate your input. Thanks. :)
