In the main, I don't think conservatives respect Hawking or his work at the level that more progressively-minded people do. Hawking believed climate change could be catastrophic for the planet. Most conservatives don't believe that man-made climate change even exists. Hawking asserted that, while there may or may not be a god, one is not needed. (Enter Occam.) Most conservatives couldn't consider a world without a supernatural Sky Daddy. So, on balance, I think I have more respect for Hawking's work and legacy than JSOP. And so, since JSOP evidently has me on ignore, would someone please tell him to STFU.

I can understand why a person as smart as hawking... who understand that our universe appears so finely tuned that you have to speculate there are almost infinite other universes and to down cosmology (which is really out there) to explain away the idea it was created would deny the existence of a creator (if he does).

I mean it is very hard to understand why God would allow such crippling diseases.
If I were God (which I am clearly not and not aspiring to be) I would for sure man some slack in the faith department. (so I hope God does.) And if I thought I had to burn some impurities out... I would give him a lot of credit for time served.


by the way... it seems its possible he might allow for the possibility of a creator who set things in motion... but it seems he leans towards thinking the creation of the universe will all be explainable some day.

El Mundo's Pablo Jauregui asked about those two references to God in one of the questions he prepared for Hawking to answer, and here's the scientist's response:

"Before we understand science, it is natural to believe that God created the universe. But now science offers a more convincing explanation. What I meant by 'we would know the mind of God' is, we would know everything that God would know, if there were a God, which there isn't. I'm an atheist."

Hawking addressed the issue more delicately several years ago when he told Reuters that he was "not religious in the normal sense," and said "God does not intervene to break the laws" that He decreed. Since then, however, there's been a lot more theorizing devoted to the origin of the universe. Hawking now believes that an approach known as M-theory will eventually reveal the grand design of the cosmos.

"In my opinion, there is no aspect of reality beyond the reach of the human mind," Hawking told El Mundo.
