good security for public WiFi trading

Dont use free wifi. Buy one of those devices get 4g lte secured at about 50 usd a month. VPNs are still vulnerable I would not rely on them.
4G is very vulnerable. They built in all sorts of features that allow tapping any connection anywhere on earth and the only protection is from people that don't know how to use them.

My public wifi rule is simple: no banking and if I really have to get off a trade when I am on the road, then only over a secure (hotel with password) wifi and don't hang about - log on, place the order and check it then log off.

" . . .3. Use Public or Hotel Wi-Fi in Confidence

Most people are unaware of this, but that Starbucks hotspot and that 10-dollar-a-day hotel wi-fi is not safe for confidential email and browsing. Public wi-fi offers no encryption security to its users, and your signals are broadcast for anyone savvy enough to eavesdrop. It's very easy for even a junior hacker to intercept your unencrypted wi-fi signal using an Evil Twin phony hotspot or a Firefox Tamper Data plugin. Public wi-fi is terribly insecure, and is perhaps the biggest reason why mobile users should consider spending the 5 to 15 dollars per month for the safety of a VPN connection.

You should a best VPN service. I will suggest you to use NordVPN because it not only provides some good features to its users but it also protects you from scammers, hackers, cyber-goons and online malicious threats.

There are something to remember to secure wifi networks
Use an inconspicuous network name
Remember physical security
Use rogue-AP detection or wireless intrusion prevention

I am not very clever with computers but I am wondering what is the best method of securing my notebook on public WiFi.

Could I use a second router or switch with some sort of inbuilt security.

I am thinking mainly of trading from a hotel room or rented apartment where WiFi is supplied.

Where I can find the WiFi Router, could I disconnect it and use my own. However in a hotel, that is not possible.

thankyou

My first choice would be to use my VPN over the actual Hotel network.

Second choice would be to use my VPN over an xfinity wifi hotspot, if an adequate one is available.

Third choice would be to use my VPN mobile app with mobile phone to generate wifi hotspot; and connect laptop to hotspot while also going through VPN on the laptop.

Using public WIFI is a risky thing for a trader. One of those risks is having your information stolen while you are on a public internet connection - according to this site about VPN services. I recommend everybody to use VPN services abroad to protect your information.

Answering the question you asked...
Intrusion detection system
honeypots
vpn (even if you use cell data)
vpn to vps better, but still have to worry about isp spying.
vpn ro broker tunnel through vpn to vps going through a router to router tunnel. (cable to a portable wifi router you bring with you and wifi to wifi wan link.

plus read a few security books.
