I think it was a right decision. But I also think the pipeline is a great thing.
EU is far too dependant on us.
EU needs that pipeline. However, us played EU (delayed the certification and promised gas but dropped the promise as China offered more money) and Russia started to increase the prise as the political issues increased.
Germany would have pay a huge political AND monetary price for the pipeline if the contract would have signed today. So better to postpone it to the spring 22 and negotiate new terms.
And stop bashing Russia or other countries. Every country tries to play it's political game. And I think everyone of us would be ashamed if we knew how our country operates in the backyard. Hopefully we will know in 50 years what happened back then for real.
