For Windows XP Users - April 8th, 2014 - End of Support

Was forced from XP to 7 recently. There are obvious improvements but nothing too revolutionary if you exclude the visuals, luckily you can almost make it feel like XP.
That said, expect some older software to not work (even in compatibility mode). Therefore it makes sense to be prepared to use the older piece of software in either VirtualBox/VMWare or Microsoft's own version of virtualization, which for me had major performance issues.
Be prepared to buy extra memory for a smoother experience and possibly a completely new PC if your current one dates before 2008, when most processors lacked virtualization extensions.
I would advise against moving to Windows 8 as it features too many bugs and problems as of now, plus the bells and whistles aren't worth it for the typical trader.

Windows 8 sucks, and indeed Windows 7 is hardly revolutionary compared to Windows XP, but better than Vista. I am using Win 7 and XP and do not plan to abandon XP soon.

Microsoft has announced this that it will continue to provide anti-malware support for Windows XP after the operating system passes its end-of-life-date on April 8.

I solved the problem by buying a new MAC, disconnecting my XP from the home network, and deleting all WIFI connections. I will restore point and use the old computer as my travel computer with a few modifications. (I did some research on google for "how to protect xp after april 2014") and I know a couple of tricks myself.

I was sure to install the final set of windows updates today before it went off line. I have heard arguments both ways. That is what I chose to do. Within the week I will scrub my computer for malware offline and then harden it ready to toss it if it gets hacked.

From now on the only net it will go on is the sneaker net (with data keys) and travel. What a great operating system when it first came out.
