ET packet loss and slow page loading

Baron couldn't send a pm with an attachment.

Been seeing more and more of this happening to your site. My guess it's the Extreme switch your server is attached to that is causing the problem. Sometimes it's just the port your attached to that has the lost. 10 percent packet loss is pretty signicant. This isn't the first time I've seen the problem so this is just a heads up.

I forwarded your message to our ISP and here is the response:

"We use DoS hardware at the border of our network. I limit the about of ICMP traffic in/out of the datacenter. ICMP is the protocol that pings and traces use. So at any given time.. you will definitely see packet loss for pings and traces. That is by design. if the amount of ICMP traffic hits a certain threshold.. we will start dropping the ICMP packets. So a trace or ping will exhibit packet loss.

But this in now way impacts normal traffic. ICMP is used for testing only.. it is not used by normal web applications."

I am looking at my end to see if I can identify the problem, because I know there is an issue somewhere. Thanks for the info.

There is no packet loss, at least a ping trace would not prove it. As your ISP verfied, their firewall is blocking pings, and this would show up as a "packet loss."

I have noticed a SQL error though many times.
