It's usually the poor rich people..who are interested in showing off.
Real wealth is much more conservative and subdued.

2--you only live once, why hide?
3-4-0ld money vs new money-- new cofident money quickly earned has a tendency to want to "prove" itself to the world. While old money that was earned generations ago and is merely maintained by the current generation is very conservative. Heck some famous wealthy family's heirs live like paupers since they are so afraid of losing more. Its really sad.
So, ostentation as self-actualization?
