Competition in this field - programming

We need hardcore coders. We have systems that have a million lines of badly written code.
A lot of the programmers i see lack the last one (hard work ethic).

Lazy entitled slackers who don't want to do any work, think they should be paid $100+ an hour just because they have in demand skills.
Why would a good (or any) developer take this job other than for a lot of money? Sounds painful

It is not painful if you are a good programmer (in the top 10%).
And yes i wouldn't do for do it for less than $100 an hour either. And it is not the only we work do. It is one of our legacy system. But i find our average programmers are not up to the job of doing any fixes or new additions to it.
I would rather work on that legacy bit of code than build mind numbing CRUD web apps.
