Intermittent fasting is a feeding protocol to control hunger during periods of calorie restricted eating. It can allow you to eat larger meals, while still maintaining or losing weight. It can also be abused to eat much larger meals (junk food, cheats, etc.), which can resemble binge eating disorder.
IMO, it can be healthy or not, based on how you use it.
You have to understand, when you start to limit calories in a severe way, something has to give. Either your meals will be frequent and small and possibly unsatisfying, or they will be less frequent and larger, and possibly more satisfying as a result of this reduced meal frequency.
For many people, severely limiting calories is easier to do than significantly increasing activity level in order to burn more fat. Maybe its preference or just less time consuming/efficient.
The health benefits of weight loss are indisputable, especially for overweight individuals.
