Interesting analysis to the UK opposition: Britain's opposition is based, according to Pär Magnusson, Nordic chief analyst at Royal Bank of Scotland, that country's government wants to protect the financial sector from being taxed more heavily just to finance assistance to countries in...

I don't think he is retarded. Although, I wouldn't know, I usually change the channel in disgust as soon as he starts blabbering his nonsense. I simply think people like him has so much hate for Wall Street that they just don't even care who they hurt with their mind-boggling proposals. In...

I wish someone in the media would ask Rep DeFazio, Senator Harkin and the protesting nurses why they are so adamant about introducing levies on middle-class investors who have done nothing wrong.

Whether the article is true or not, it would not hurt to contact our representatives in Washington. Unless they hear from us, maybe they will change their mind due to articles such as the one in Politico. I already called the offices of my three reps in DC earlier today to let them know where I...

This is a great point that is not emphasized enough. The people in favor of the FTT keep harping on how much money it will raise. But none of the opponents seem to realize that with less trading, there is also going to be much less short term capital gains taxes raised.

60% of bankruptcies caused by medical bills

How are pre-existing conditions treated by the German insurance companies? In the US, insurance companies are allowed to disallow someone with a pre-existing condition to even purchase insurance. Is it different in Germany?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you only need 51 votes to pass the budget. In other words, the filibuster cannot be used to block the budget. So, there wouldn't be any need for a reconciliation.

I love this part of the article: Turner triggered controversy in August when he first floated the transaction tax idea. “Some financial activities which proliferated over the last 10 years were socially useless, and some parts of the system were swollen beyond their optimal size,” he told...

I agree. I would argue it is similar to Senator Dodd in CT. If he had stayed in office, he most likely would have lost to any Republican this fall. Instead, according to intrade, the Dems are now likely to keep this seat. In addition, I would assume that whoever replaces Brown will also be in...

It will never pass unless the Republicans agree to it. Schumer has claimed he is against it. So, all the GOP would have to do is to filibuster it. Will they?

Or 52 years, which is how long the first Transaction tax in this country lasted. I will be dead by the time the next transaction tax gets abolished. It is better not to have it enacted in the first place. I am surprised that some people on this thread seem to be so sure that it doesn't...

I'm sorry for not being clear. My suggestion is that we focus on the issue at hand, transaction taxes and not on other political issues. After all, the name of the thread is "1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today". All least that's what I intend to do.

We currently don't have a Republican President and this issue is being discussed in Congress now. So, it doesn't matter what a Republican President would do or not do regarding signing this into law. What does matter is this; once this is law, history hasn't exactly shown that...

Just for the record; we had this transaction tax before. We had it between 1914-1966. During this era we had both Democratic as well as Republican Presidents. Nobody, irregardless of party got rid of it. Ironically, it was a Democratic President with a Democratic Congress who finally got rid of...

Do you by any chance know how the rest of the Bundestag feel about the issue? I assume that even if the development minister and his party are against it, there are several more liberal parties in their Bundestag who would favor this and join Merkel's position?
