    Stock falls on profit taking?

Stocks fall because those who choose to sell at that price are more motivated or have more money than those who choose to buy at that price. We can't know more than that - anything else is just stories we tell ourselves to foster understanding.

I recall that it's sometimes possible to take losses over a few years if you can't use them all this year, but Girija is right - talk to a professional in your state.

The Myth: 3x ETFs good only for short term...

I appreciate all the interesting perspectives offered here, and I see that there are considerations I've yet to take into account. I'm going to digest the comments made and do a little more research before I comment further. Thanks to all who've contributed, in particular @wmwmw, @userque...

The Myth: 3x ETFs good only for short term...

Thanks for all the thoughtful replies. Just a few thoughts: Someone mentioned putting 100% of an account into a leveraged ETF as being a bad idea. I totally agree, but I never suggested that nor does it bear on the point I was making. It's true that holding a leveraged ETF until it's value...

The Myth: 3x ETFs good only for short term...

I've often heard/read the conventional wisdom that leveraged ETFs (especially 3x leveraged) are only good for short term trading; that costs and variances and what-not will make them losers over the long term. I've seen absolutely no evidence that this is actually true. To test it, I took the...

    Time Frames

I put my Stop Loss orders on the price - they're not directly tied to any timeframe. I pick my Stops based on the most recent local support level (the level it rebounded from) which doesn't change with timeframe. I don't use Take Profit orders, specifically - I move my Stop up periodically...

good to know information for new traders

Best bits of information I could give might be: Specialize - find one technique or setup and focus on that exclusively until you become an expert Wait for price to move in your direction before jumping in. Check shorter timeframes for confirmation Pick your loss exit point before you trade and...

    Time Frames

As a swing trader, I look for setups/opportunities primarily on the daily charts. I can usually see the trend on the daily as well, though zooming out to a weekly chart is also good for checking trend and getting a larger perspective. I'll also check shorter timeframes occasionally (typically...

You're suggesting that brains are not really neural networks, or am I misunderstanding your comment?

Handling Gaps that go Against you -- trading strategies?

I place hard stops the night before to protect my capital. 99% of the time it works great but occasionally an overnight gap causes a bigger than planned for loss. It's just part of trading and needs to be built into my overall money and risk management strategy. If a gap loss is too big to...

Anyone using Neural Networks for Trading?

Hey, I like that! A train that trains its brain! Our brains are trained every day of our lives... every life experience, everything we hear, read or see trains our brains. Our thoughts control our actions, so what we do depends on what we think which depends on what we hear see and read. Is...

A strategy to limit the cost of time value

I'm with jamesbp. This trade seems designed to reduce theta loss at the expense of delta gain. I'd rather go further in the money, which reduces theta loss yet increases delta gain. The downside, of course, is paying a higher premium.

Anyone using Neural Networks for Trading?

Interesting point. Indicators are a way of pre-processing the price data. That could argue in favor of using them to help better grasp the import of the data - especially for new traders.

Anyone using Neural Networks for Trading?

Ha!! It was a trick question! We all use a neural network for trading! The most powerful NN ever created is right between your ears. Every time you trade or look at charts or read or think about trading you're training that powerful neural net. Make sure you are training it with useful and...

with an indicator that (kind of) points out tops and bottoms in real time, position sizing? (pics)

That would not be something I would ever do. First of all, I'm looking for a stock to be moving in the direction I'm trading - need to have momentum already in place. If you want to go North, why jump on a train that's going South? As for adding more as it goes down, that's like trying to...

Can a slope which exceeds a value be considered a pattern?

Certainly slope can provide a signal. Increasing slope suggests increasing strength in a continuing move or trend - decreasing slope suggests the opposite. It would have to be properly interpreted within the context of the price action, of course, and the trick would be to determine the most...
